Man spared prison term for assault outside pub

ALEKSANDRS Savickis (37) with an address at Raheenduff Park, Foulksmills was spared jail for an assault on a 65 year old man outside a pub in Wellingtonbridge.

Judge Gerard Haughton decided to suspend the eight month term he recorded against the Latvian farm worker for the attack which left Peter Barry unconscious.

The matter was investigated by Garda John Buggy who was called to the scene outside the Tír na nÓg on January 22.

Wexford Court was told how the injured party and his wife Mary were leaving a private function in the pub when he passed the defendant who was sitting on a window sill.

Barry found himself struck on the back of the neck with a punch which put him on to the ground.

His wife tried to intervene but could not prevent her husband then being kicked and punched around the head.

The defendant’s employer Robert O’Connell was in court to hear the accused described as horrified when he became aware later of what he had done.

Solicitor Cormac Dunleavy said that Savickis had been ejected from the public house earlier that night after he had been drinking for some considerable time.

Mr Dunleavy revealed that the defendant also ended up in hospital as he and the jeep he had with him were attacked in the wake of the assault.

Judge Haughton marked the seriousness of the assault on Peter Barry with the eight month sentence. However, the term was suspended on the production of €500 compensation to be paid to the injured party, with a requirement to pay a further €500 within six months.
