County’s tourism ties to Savannah will be further strengthened online

THE growing ties between County Wexford and Savannah, Georgia in the US will be further strengthened at the National Opera House today (Tuesday, June 13) when the Wexford-Savannah Axis launch their new online tourism experience, linking the two locations.

This innovative online experience is a mobile-friendly website which will prompt people to learn about County Wexford’s strong heritage tourism offering as they are enjoying heritage sites in Savannah and vice versa.

The primary purpose of the Wexford-Savannah Axis project is to share information about the historical connections between the two places to a broader public.

The founding partners in the Wexford-Savannah Axis are Georgia Southern University, Waterford Institute of Technology, the Georgia Historical Society and the John F. Kennedy Trust. The project is also supported by county and municipal entities across Wexford and Savannah.

Economic Development Officer with Wexford County Council Carolyne Godkin says the new website is the most recent initiative building on Wexford and Savannah’s shared history.

‘Over the last two years, public representatives and business people from Wexford have met with their counterparts in Savannah on both sides of the Atlantic in order to build economic and cultural links between the two locations.

The story of emigration that links the two places historically was the spark that ignited what will hopefully grow to become a lasting economic relationship,’ she said.

The event to launch the new website in the National Opera House on June 13 will feature some short musical and stage performances, a sample of popular food enjoyed in Savannah and poster presentations given by visiting university students from Savannah which will explain and explore the historic connections between Wexford and Savannah.

This free event starts at 6 p.m. and all are welcome to attend.
