Communities go the distance for spring clean effort
Communities across North Wexford spent much of the past two months giving particular stretches of road in their local area a thorough clean as part of the annual North Wexford 2k Clean competition.
The competition is organised and judged each year by Gorey Municipal District, and awards will be handed out on Thursday, June 15, at 7 p.m. at Gorey Civic Offices. However, the identity of the overall winner won’t be revealed until the Keep Wexford Beautiful awards in November.
This year saw yet another increase in the number of groups entering the competition. Entries rose from 20 in 2015 and 32 in 2016 to 36 in 2017.
Between them, they cleaned 83 two kilometre stretches of road right across the district this year, compared to 74 last year, and 41 the year before.
Some seven groups cleaned over five stretches of road this year and they now go forward to the final and will be judged again over the summer, before the Keep Wexford Beautiful awards night.
Wexford County Council provided skips where they could be accommodated, and some groups filled them more than once. Bags were also provided, and these were collected when full by the Council.
Signs are now up to let people know the roads are now clean, in the hope they can be kept that way, and to encourage people not to litter the countryside.
Congratulations were sent to all who took part in the 2k Clean effort.
