Wexford clubs out in force

CO. WEXFORD clubs travelled in good numbers to Tullamore last weekend for day one of the Leinster track and field championsh­ips.

Full results have yet to be posted. However, the following gives the highlights from a Wexford perspectiv­e.

Bree once again showed its strength in the younger age categories, taking home a decent haul of medals. Note that, for the results listed below, Under-9 and Under-10 events are ‘pairs’ with the result being based on the performanc­e of two athletes.

Leah Bolger and Ava Doyle (Under-9) won the 60m pairs and took silver in the long jump. P.J. Breen and Tom Finn were second in the Under-9 long jump.

Ciara Laffan and Keira Wilson won the Under-10 long jump and placed second in the 60m.

The Under-11 pairing of Katie Doyle and Johanna Chapman won silver in both the long jump and the 60m.

Moving up to Under-12, Abbie Doyle won the 60m while Gracie Kehoe was second in the high jump.

Seán Rowley was second in the Under-13 60m and Shane Doran was second in the Under-13 high jump.

Enniscorth­y A.C’s Dannan Long won gold in the Under-12 high jump. The club’s Nessa Long and Laura O’Brien also struck gold in the Under-9 turbo javelin pairs.

Myles Hewlett of United Striders won a silver medal in the Under-13 600m in a new best time of 1m 40.5s.

The Co. Wexford girls’ Under-11 team won bronze medals in the inter-county 4 x 100m relay. The team was: Kara Morrissey (St. Killian’s), Ciara Laffan (Bree), Katie Doyle (Bree), Johanna Chapman (Bree).

The Co. Wexford boys’ Under-11 team of Tom Funge, Kevin O’Mahoney, Alfie Whelan and Sam Myers won their 4 x 100m relay.

The Under-13 boys’ and Under-13 girls’ teams narrowly missed out on medals at the Leinster track and field championsh­ips, both finishing in fourth place.

S.B.R’s Orlaith Deegan leaped her way to a silver medal in the girls’ Under-13 high jump.

Wexford Athletics track and field results, day four, June 9 - girls’ Under-14 hammer: 1, Aisling O’Brien (D.M.P.), 24.58; 2, Triini Jurisoo (Menapians), 24.05; 3, Sophie Kelly (Menapians), 21.22.

Girls’ Under-15 hammer: 1, Caitríona Doyle (Craanford), 20.82.

Boys’ Under-15 hammer: 1,Gergely Pap (St. Paul’s), 34.74; 2, Milan Kovacs (St. Paul’s), 16.82.

Girls’ Under-18 hammer: 1, Marguerite Furlong (Adamstown), 22.92.
