ROSSLARE LADIES

One of our star lady golfers, Niamh Byrne, put in a star performance on Tuesday. Playing off 9, she came first with 36 points.

Also still on a winning streak was Mary Frances Codd who, having won the week before, came in second. Well done ladies!

On Monday, June 5, our Intermediate Cup team went out to play against New Ross in Faithlegg in the torrents of rain. The weather was so bad that the match had to be called off after about an hour as the course was unplayable.

The players, caddies and managers, clubs and clothes, all soaking wet, had to head home, dry out and play again the next day. One can only admire all for such valiant and determined performances.

Unfortunately, they were beaten on the second day, but well done ladies. The tie was in the third round.

Best of luck to the Junior Cup team which is playing against Enniscorthy on Sunday, June 18, at 3.50 p.m. in Wexford, managed by Mary O’Shaughnessy and Dorcas Maher. This is a third round match so if anyone is around to support this close-by venue it would be appreciated.

Our Links Pro-Am with Kelly’s Resort Hotel has been launched for September 9 in aid of Wexford Hospice Homecare and St. Patrick’s Special School. Teams can now book slots to play.

The ladies’ committee are sponsoring a team to enter. The qualifying team will be picked from the best scores on June 27, July 4 and July 25.

Tuesday, June 20, is a ladies’ singles stableford sponsored by Pamela Scott and Marie Therese Swan.

Saturday, June 3, ladies’ open singles, 16-hole non-qualifier: 1, Susan Evans (13/12), 30 points; 2, Kathleen Cullimore (18/16), 28 points; 3, Louise Wilson (17/15), 27 points (back six).

Tuesday, June 6, singles stableford (C.S.S. 34 points), sponsored by Rosslare Pharmacy: 1, Niamh Byrne (9), 36 points; 2, Mary Frances Codd (20), 35 points; gross, Doreen McGovern (12), 22 points; 3, Pat Kinsella (26), 35 points; 4, Catherine Howard (15), 34 points; Seniors, Ann Kelly (18), 33 points.

Wednesday, June 7, open singles stableford: O’Shaughnessy (16), 34 points.

ROSSLARE

1, Mary

A total of 229 people competed in the Captain’s (Paddy Lonergan) prize in Rosslare last week.

Played over two days, Friday and Saturday, the weather was sunny but with a strong wind blowing, stronger on Saturday when scoring was difficult. The course is in pristine condition but it is important to keep the ball on the fairways.

The winner with a fine score of 68 was one of our young guns, Conor Kelly (4). Conor, who was on the Fred Daly-winning teams back some years ago, took some time out but is now playing seriously again.

On Friday he played the first nine in 37, eight pars and a bogey at the eighth. Into the wind he really played well. He had two eagles at the 13th and 18th and a birdie at the 12th, and despite dropping shots at the 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th, he won on the breakdown from Dave McCabe (17).

Dave is playing very well at the moment and has reduced his handicap considerably. In his round he had eight pars and a birdie three at the fourth, but three double bogeys and a treble bogey cost him outright victory.

Mark Mullen (scr.) won the gross with 77 and another man in form, Vinny O’Reilly (14), won the veterans with 69.

Other results: 3, Bill Joyce (11), 70; 4, Shay Downer (13), 70; 5, Mark Fitzpatrick (7), 71; 6, Claude Howlin (11), 71; front nine, Eamonn Garrigan (11), 33; back nine, Ultan Quirke (8), 33; longest drive, Paud O’Brien; nearest the pin, Pat Kinsella.

Tommy Boyce (18) won the Captain’s prize to the Burrow members with 44, one shot ahead of Frank Byrne (18).

The Captain, Paddy, presented all the prizes at a very enjoyable Captain’s dinner on Saturday night.

On Sunday, Kelly’s Resort Hotel sponsored the singles and the winner was Paul Cummings (17) with 40 points. Despite a blow at the 16th, he had halves of 20 points and a clearcut win over his nearest rival, Paud O’Brien (3).

Paud had birdies at the fourth and 13th for 37 points. Ger MacNamara (4) had birdies at the first, third, twelfth and 18th to win the gross, while Denis Asple (7) won the veterans.

Third on 37 was John Hearne (15), and Rory Deane (6) was fourth with 36 points. Cormac Quigley (16) won the sponsor’s prize with 35 points. Bill Kelly presented the prizes.

Singles: 1, Philip Quigley (19), 35 points; 2, Davy Noonan (8), 35 points.

Last year Rosslare ran a Pro-Am for the first time in many years and it proved a great success, so much so that the club is organising another one this year. It takes place on Saturday, September 9, and will once again be sponsored by Kelly’s Resort Hotel.

Benefiting from the proceeds will be St. Patrick’s Special Needs School and Wexford Hospice Homecare. More details later.

Well done to Gary Collins who finished tied sixth in the recent East of Ireland championship in County Louth. Gary had rounds of 72, 76, 71 and 71 (level par) to finish seven shots behind the winner.

Ian Lynch, John Brady and Paul Murphy also competed. All made the two-round cut but failed to make the final round.

Fixtures: Saturday, June 17, ladies’ and gents’ fourball; Sunday, June 18, gents’ singles; open ladies’ and gents’ singles every Wednesday.

WEXFORD

Our Captain’s prize proved to be an emotional event given that our late Captain, Tony O’Neill, had only passed away a few short weeks previously. However, the competition went ahead and as Tony himself would say: ‘the show must go on’.

The show did go on and the leading qualifier, the Wee Man himself, Tom Connon, was the winner of the Captain’s prize for 2017. It was a fitting win for Tom who was a friend and often team-mate of Tony’s on many a team that represented Wexford Golf Club over the years.

The O’Neill family were present for the play-off and the subsequent presentation of prizes. Tony’s wife, Bridget, presented Tom with the Captain’s prize for 2017.

Results: 1, Tom Connon; 2, Roy Sexton; 3, Richard Browne; gross, Mark Mullen; 4, Seán Flood; 5, John O’Neill; vets., John Lynn; Cat. 1, Peter Byrne; Cat. 2, Joe Sinnott; Cat. 3, Derek Casey. Qualifiers’ prizes were won by Laurence Carley, Pascal Kavanagh and Pat ‘Kenny’ Walsh.

A unique prize was given to a former Leinster fourball team-mate of Tony’s. This prize was won by Paul Bridges.

The winners in the ladies’ ten-hole competition were Beppi O’Connor and Trina Walsh. The under-age winners were Ben McAleese, Cathal Dowd and Ryan Cashin.

Wexford Golf Club would like to thank Bridget O’Neill and family for their generous sponsorship of Tony’s Captain’s prize. We would also like to thank Paul Harrington, physical therapist, for his continued sponsorship of the Captain’s prize winner’s jacket.

Heavy rain put paid to last weekend’s competitions. A number of players were very disappointed at the postponements, but none more so than Alan Keeling who spent the week perfecting his short game under the watchful eye of his new coach.

Competitions did go ahead however on Tuesday, and the winner of the 18-hole singles was John Cotter with 35 points (back nine). Second place went to Philip Murphy with 35 points, and third on 33 points was George ‘Four Hips’ Roche. The over-70s’ prize was won by Brian Trench.

Wednesday’s 14-hole fourball was won by Andrew O’Brien and Laurence Carley with 38 points.

Friday’s four-person team event was won by David Fenlon, Keith Rossiter, Liam Flood and Paul Carthy with 77 points (back six).

Congratulations to John Ffrench who was the last winner of the Joker draw. Next weekend’s prize is over €2,700. For just €2, give yourself a chance to win the jackpot. The weekly draw is held at 8 p.m. every Sunday in the clubhouse bar.

WEXFORD LADIES

Last Thursday, June 8, we had our late Captain Tony O’Neill’s prize to the ladies competition. Sixty-six ladies played and there was some very good scoring.

Results: 1, Mary Walsh (26), 66; 2, Susan Kelly (26), 68; 3, Deirdre Colfer (24), 71; 4, Mary Cashe (27), 72; 5, Patricia Boyd (21), 73.

The gross winner with 84 was Leonie Furlong, who also won nearest the pin, landing five feet five inches from the flag. The Category A winner was Irene Bolger (10) with 75. The Category B winner was Eileen Kent (27) with 75, and Category C was won by Pat Flanagan (30) with 80.

Therese Glasheen (22) won the Senior category with 77, and the Super Senior category was won by Mary Maguire (27) with 91.

The nine-hole competition was won by Noreen Power (17) with 16. The best front nine went to Barbara Mantripp (26) with 33, and the back nine went to Patricia Hanton (22) with 36.

Unfortunately, it was a bad weekend for our inter-club teams. The Mixed Foursomes team lost to Mount Juliet on Saturday, and the Finn Trophy team lost to New Ross on Sunday. Hard luck to all the players and selectors.

This coming week sees the Boyne Trophy team playing Waterford on Wednesday, June 14, at 3.28 p.m., with three home matches and two away. Support for the ladies playing would be greatly appreciated.

This Thursday’s competition is an 18-hole singles stableford sponsored by Keville Hairdressing.

ENNISCORTHY LADIES

The ladies who played early on Tuesday, June 6, escaped the showers that the afternoon brought.

Despite the weather, the course is in immaculate condition and the course staff are to be commended for their efforts.

The competition was sponsored by our own professional, Stephen Fitzpatrick, and was a stroke/medal for the P.G.A. Tankard.

Results: 1, Jacinta Kenny (21), 71 nett; 2, Kay Ryan (27), 74 nett; gross, Ciara Sharkey (4), 76 nett; 3, Lori Whitney (16), 75 nett; 4, Vera Garry (22), 76 nett (back nine); Senior, Julie McCarthy (17), 79 nett; 36 handicap, Sheila McGrath (36), 84 nett; nine-hole qualifier, Betty O’Leary, 15 points.

Next week’s competition is our President’s prize to the ladies and is a stroke/medal.

Our ladies’ Seniors’ competition is on Thursday, June 15, and is sponsored by Coppen’s Pharmacy.

The Junior Cup team play Rosslare in Wexford on June 18. We wish the team, manager and caddies the best of luck!

COURTOWN

Tuesday, June 6, saw the pink/blue open day arrive. The amount of planning and coercion that had gone into this day was not for the faint-hearted. The object of the exercise, apart from golf, was a fundraiser for the North Wexford Nursing Trust.

Blue and pink details were visible everywhere on the course, in the car park and clubhouse courtesy of Bronagh Stafford. Thank you for Bronagh for all your hard work.

Outfits, both sedate and outrageous, were seen teeing off, the most outrageous coming in the men’s nine-hole in the evening. Pink wigs, tights and varying degrees of ensemble were seen parading around the course and clubhouse, all adding to the atmosphere of the day.

Denis Howell was master of ceremonies in the clubhouse on Tuesday evening, and to say it was boisterous is an understatement.

Raffle tickets were sold, prizes both useful and useless were won.
