‘Food Cloud’ appeal by Tesco

-

THE Tesco store in Gorey is calling for local community organisations and support groups to sign up to its surplus food donations programme which is powered by ‘Food Cloud’.

Local organisations can receive perfectly edible, quality surplus food that otherwise would go to waste at the end of each day in store. Hundreds of good causes across the country are putting this surplus food to great use every day from hosting cookery lessons, to providing school children with breakfast. Charities that have benefited range from community centres to homelessness charities.

Tesco’s four stores in Wexford have so far donated over 132,000kgs of surplus food, the equivalent of 290,140 meals supporting seven causes.

Using the Food Cloud application, Tesco staff notify charities of the food items available. Typical items include meat, bread, chilled convenience foods, milk, dairy and fresh fruit and vegetables.

Commenting on the programme, store manager in Gorey, David Leonard, said ‘even in the most efficient retail operations, there will inevitably be surplus food and we are thrilled to be making a valuable contribution to local communities enabling organisations to focus on the vital services they provide.

‘We encourage any community groups that think they can benefit from receiving surplus food to get involved today by dropping in to our Gorey store.’
