FÉILE – Our club played host to visitors from Clonkill camogie club from Westmeath and Céide Lámh Dhearg Hurling Club from Armagh last weekend as part of Féile Na nGael 2017. Our visitors arrived early on Friday afternoon in time for a scrumptious hot meal and then some down time to get to know each other before hurling matches in Craanford and camogie matches in Gorey.

Craanford hurlers played Mungret St Paul’s and Rathnure, with defeat to the Limerick side and a draw against Rathnure while in Gorey the girls played Naomh Mhuire, Portmore form Armagh and Naomh Eanna, Gorey. Both these matches ended with impressive wins for our camogie girls. A Féile parade held in Gorey on Friday evening was very colourful and lively. Matches against our host visitors were both played in Craanford on Saturday morning, with the hurlers being defeated and the camogie girls keeping a clean sheet winning all three games.

With some free time all players were able to spend quality time with their host families before the hurlers headed to Ferns and the camogie contingent travelled to Clara in Kilkenny. The Q/F stage of Féile saw both the hurlers and camogie players end their journey for 2017, despite both teams putting in impressive displays. Our visitors also exited the competition at this stage.

Thanks to Fr Richard for a lovely mass, this was followed by a parade through the village to Cooney’s for a great barbecue and entertainment. A lively sing song also took place in Mary Anne’s. Our visiting players each received a gift of a club jersey from their host families as well as both clubs taking home a magnificent wooden plaque inscribed with club crests and the Hurler’s prayer.

To all the players from both camogie and hurling teams, team mentors, the parents and host families, to our generous sponsors, John Bass Tyres, Stephen in P& H Doyle’s, John O’Brien, K & K Windows, Michael and Eileen Doyle in Cooney’s, Raymond Byrne, Kevin Byrne, John O’Rourke, Craanford Hall committee, Craanford Community Field committee, Craanford Fr O’Regan’s GAA and Craanford-Monaseed camogie club, Redmond Hotel Group, Edel Redmond, Liz Byrne, Brendan Tobin, Sharon, Geraldine and John Redmond-thank you, for making Féile 2017 so memorable.

Our visitors have sent numerous messages to say what an amazing community we have and how impressed they were with their time spent among us, thank you to one and all for playing your part.
