NEW ROSS

With the good weather prevailing, the club is a hive of activity this month with all sorts of competitions taking place.

In the weekend open fourball sponsored by John and Betty Moran of The Theatre Tavern, some fine scores were recorded, none more so than that of the winning pair, Michael Kavanagh (16) and Noel Dunne (19), with 48 points.

Second after a countback were Eamon Delaney (15) and Noel Devine (17) who edged out Ger Ronan (6) and Pat McGrath (18), with both pairs recording 43 points.

The club foursomes matchplay final was won by Declan Clarke and Joe Doyle who triumphed over Leo Carroll and Eamon Dungan after a great battle.

Art Ward (14) and John Murphy (18) won last Tuesday evening’s fourball with a great score of 39 points over the 14 holes played. The prize sponsors were club members Joe O’Farrell, Robert O’Dwyer, Pat Whelan and Seán Murphy.

Second on 38 points were Tadgh Cahill (12) and Seán Diskin (16), whilst Johnny Aylward (14) and Murt Hogan (19) finished third with 36 after a countback over the last nine holes. The sponsor for this evening (July 11) is Ger Martin of the Golden Grill, Irishtown.

All members are asked to support the Split The Pot fundraising effort in which the proceeds are divided equally between the winner and the club. Entry is only €2 for which you have a chance of winning a considerable sum of money depending on how many members put in their €2.

The All-Ireland fourball team bowed out of the competition to a very strong Royal Curragh outfit at the weekend. In New Ross the Kildare club representatives were tremendous strikers of the ball off the tee which gave them an advantage which ultimately led to outright victory. Nevertheless, well done to our team for getting so far in this keenly-contested completion.

NEW ROSS SENIORS

In almost perfect golfing conditions, 14 teams took part in our weekly competition on Thursday. It was shirt sleeve time and all enjoyed the champagne scramble format which yielded big scores.

We welcomed back Dick Cuddihy and George Peters for their first game of competitive golf for some time and both enjoyed it and the camaraderie of the Seniors group once again.

With the course in immaculate condition, the scoring was high and the winning team brought in a tremendous 105 points to emerge clear winners. Andy Lawlor (11), Richie Aylward (18), Dick O’Neill (18) and Martin Burke (25) won by four points from Tony Redmond (18), Aidan Kent (20), Mick Wade (22) and Michael Brennan (22) who finished on 101 points.

Third place after a countback on 98 points went to the three-person team of Willie Byrne (14), Patsy Farrell (16) and Fr. Jim Curtis. Difficult pin placings meant no one got nearest the pin prizes on either the ninth or eleventh hole.

We have no game this Thursday, July 13, as it is the charity Meals on Wheels singles day, but all members are asked to support this worthy cause. The next home outing is on Thursday, July 20.

In the meantime we visit Dungarvan on Monday, July 17, and the teams will be announced this Thursday at the Meals on Wheels day. Anyone not already booked in and wishing to play, contact Jamesie Murphy by text or phone on 085-1846172.

Next Wednesday the competition is sponsored by Sid’s Diner - thank you Maria Burford for your support. It is 18-hole stableford. Booking is open and draws will be at the usual times.

On Wednesday, July 12, prize-giving for the last four competitions will take place at 9 p.m. Please ensure you are represented if you cannot be there in person to accept your prize.

A little earlier at about 8.30 p.m., Robert Farrell will give a short introduction to some exercises especially designed for golf. Robert is qualified in sport science and is well positioned to offer a personalised fitness programme for any interested golfing clients. His presentation seems very promising, so put that date in your diary ladies.

The club fourball matchplay is posted on the noticeboard in the locker room. Handicap allowance is explained on a sheet on the handicap noticeboard.

Please adhere to the deadlines given so that the competition can be run in good order. Names on the top of each draw should make contact with opponents.

The Get into Golf scheme has now advanced to its second phase. Ladies who signed up for the rest of the year will play a scramble every Wednesday with a volunteer from the ladies’ section.

We are delighted with the healthy uptake of this latest offer and hope that the new golfers will enjoy their experience of New Ross Golf Club even more. Many thanks to all the ladies who helped out for that last eight weeks, and in particular to Ann Healy whose sterling work has brought the initiative to this juncture.

While the ladies’ teams had little luck last week, today (Tuesday) the Mary McKenna team travel to Castlecomer to try their luck at the north Kilkenny venue. The match starts at 2 p.m. Best of luck to both teams.

The club is very appreciative of the contribution made by all the ladies who played on teams, caddied or managed. Your generosity is exemplary.

COURTOWN

We send our congratulations to Niall Slattery who won our Captain’s (John Fitzgerald) prize on Saturday, and he did so in some style, carding a very fine round of 70 for day two, having carded a 73 on the previous week.

And as often happens in Courtown, it could not have been much tighter at the finish; while Niall had a total of 143, there were six others snapping at his heels who carded 144.

The Captain thanked all who had made his day such a success and of course there was much praise again for James Timmins and his staff for the condition of the course. The great day’s golfing was followed by an equally great night’s entertainment.

The arrival of Michael Collins’ 1920 Rolls Royce proved to be a big attraction on the day as many members and visitors came along to take photographs of this most historic car. We contacted Leslie Byrne, who had supplied us with a vintage car in 2011 for the Captain’s drive-in, to tell him the car ‘Sliabh na mBan’ would be on display if he cared to come along to view it.

Not alone did he come to view the Rolls Royce, but he arrived in a pristine 1918 Ford Model T. The two vehicles looked amazing side by side.

The sponsor was Prospect Holiday & Leisure Park and we are extremely grateful to Bronagh Stafford for the sponsorship and delighted that she could attend on Tuesday evening to present her wonderful prizes.
