Hayshed fire causes extensive damage

-

Extensive damage was caused to a hayshed at Cahore on Friday night.

Gorey fire service was called to the scene at 8.45 p.m. for what would turn out to be an eight hour operation.

Two units and a support vehicle from Gorey were in attendance, and a water tanker from Bunclody was also called for assistance.

Two teams of two fire fighters wearing breathing apparatus spent several hours bringing the incident under control. A local fire hydrant was also used for water supply.

Fires which had spread to gorse and vegetation around the perimeter of the structure were also extinguished, and a local farmer was brought in with machinery to help remove the heavy smouldering bales from the shed so they could be dampened down.

It’s thought that around 30 large bales were destroyed. The cause of the fire has not been determined.

The crews remained on scene until 4.45 a.m. to ensure there was no further risk.

The previous day, two units of Gorey fire service were called to go to a fire at the former Bayview Hotel building in the centre of Courtown at 3.35 p.m. They discovered an old mattress alight on the roof of the derelict hotel which has been boarded up for many years.

They then did a check of the rest of the premises for any other potential fire risks, and left the scene at 4.35 p.m. The cause of the fire is unknown.
