Ladies, you have had notice about the club classic from August 10 to 13. Please do your best to promote this important fundraiser by inviting golfers from other clubs to come. Prizes are great and the entry fee is very competitive.

The Mary McKenna team came away with the spoils from Castlecomer where they scored a comprehensive victory over the Co. Kilkenny side. We now advance to the Leinster semis, facing The Heath up there before July 27, so exciting times lie ahead for the five pairs on the Mary McKenna team.

The trophy was launched in 2014 by Woodenbridge to celebrate Ireland’s greatest female golfer, Mary McKenna M.B.E. It is a Scotch foursomes matchplay format for ladies with teams from all over Ireland competing.

This prestigious event will culminate with the final match later in the season in Woodenbridge. Support will be very welcome and of course you can follow proceedings at home on the club app.

The Get into Golf ladies enjoyed another scramble on Wednesday on the fine sunny evening and the fitness presentation later in the clubhouse by Robbie Farrell who can provide clients with a customised fitness programme promised to add yards to your shots!

The scrambles will continue on Wednesday at 6.30 p.m. for those ladies who chose payment options for continuing their journey into golf.

Congratulations to Mary Dowling whose Leinster team was successful in the women’s and girls’ inter-provincials played in Shannon last week. You can read all about it and see photographs on Golfnet.

NEW ROSS

In glorious golfing weather there was a big field of participants all out in search of the much-coveted Fleetwood Cup.

Popular member, Basil Glennon, has been the generous sponsor of this competition for a long number of years and the club are very grateful to him for continuing to do so.

There were some great scores recorded, none better than the 65 nett brought in by Tony Sexton (24). In second place was club Captain Peter Goggin (17) with a 69, albeit after a countback over the last nine holes. On the same score (69) and placed third was Paul Cleary (9).

The gross prize with 79 went to Donal Hosey. Category 1 with a nett 69 was won by Michael Kelleher (5), whilst Category 2 went to Ray Kehoe (10), also shooting 69, and Category 3 saw Tom Clarkin (19) with his 69 take that prize.

The Tuesday evening open fourball continues apace and some fine scores are being recorded in this great July weather. Our sponsor last Tuesday was Ger Martin of the Golden Grill, Irishtown, to whom we extend our sincere thanks.

Two low handicappers, Joe Doyle (7) and John McEvoy (13), took the honours with 36 points. After a countback the pairing of Tommy Liston (8) and Tommy Ryan (15) took second prize with 35 points, whilst club President J.J. Hoyne (18) and Teresa Byrne (20) were third on the same score. This Tuesday evening the sponsor will be Pat Kehoe Oils.

Please note: this is an all-day event and you can play at any time whatever pairings you have - men, ladies or mixed - so please give it your support. Morning time is usually free but you should book a time after 2 p.m.

Members are encouraged to support the Split The Pot fundraiser which only costs €2 to enter. Remember, the bigger the pot the bigger the pay out with a guaranteed winner each week.

You are helping the club’s finances in a real and meaningful way for a small donation, with a chance of pulling in a nice sum if lucky.

NEW ROSS SENIORS

We had a big crowd on tour at the truly magnificent Dungarvan Golf Club yesterday (Monday), and the results will be published next week.

All members please note that there is a change to the club’s monthly singles competition. This format has been cancelled courtesy of club Captain, Peter Goggin, and will be replaced by a three-person team competition each month alternating between a scramble and stableford. The first of the new competitions is on Thursday, July 27, and will be a three-person scramble.

In the Autumn Seniors Alliance outing at Clonmel on Monday, July 31, the format here too has been changed from a singles to a four-person champagne scramble with the two best scores per hole 1-18 counting.

The timesheet for that is with Jamesie Murphy by text or phone on 085-1846172.

The second-last fixture of that group is pencilled in for New Ross on Monday, August 21, when we expect a big influx of players coming to take part.
