SEARCHING FOR THEIR ROOTS

- BY SARA GAHAN

FOUR women travelled over the Atlantic Ocean to take a tour of North Wexford in hope of finding the missing link with their family tree.

Corinne Simser-Wagg (Ontario), Nancy Robinson (Montreal), Jane Thompson (Toronto) and Heidi Cavagnolo (San Francisco) discovered over 15 years ago that they were all related whilst researching their family history.

The women arrived in Gorey where they stayed for over two weeks researching their ancestors Joseph Kidd and Ann Poole who left North Wexford in 1824 to live in Canada. It is through their daughters, Elizabeth and Ann Kidd, that the four ladies are related.

Nancy, one of the descendants, found her Irish connection through researching Ann Morris (née Tyndall) from the parish of Dunamore, Wexford who they are searching for.

Ann emigrated alone to Canada between 1817 and 1824 with five children, Henry (who later married Elizabeth Kidd in Canada), John, Elizabeth, Ann and Mary.

Unfortunately the ladies were not successful in locating an Ann Morris in Wexford nor finding any Tyndalls to confirm a direct relationship with their Ann Tyndall Morris.

A highlight of their trip was when they found their oldest common ancestor Ann Elizabeth Buckinger in the Gorey Market Square cemetary.

Ann, who died in 1977 aged 77, was a Theis of Gorey and fourth wife of Matthew Buckinger who was a famous magician. Ann’s daughter married a Poole (both Palatine families who settled on the Ram estate in 1710).

Other highlights included seeing the setting from which their ancestors originated.
