Parks tennis smash

Great month finishes on a high note

-

ANOTHER GREAT month of Parks tennis finished on Friday at the Wexford Harbour Tennis and Boat Club.

A total of 62 children played in the finals from Under-10 to Under-16, with more girls playing this year in the older age groups.

The weather for the month had been perfect, but unfortunately finals day again was challenging.

However, all the children got stuck in, and each child played two matches of first to three games at the pool stages. The winners of the pools then went to semi-finals and on to finals.

All the finals were good matches, and the best were the Under-14 girls with Kate Sinnott of the Boat Club against the winner, Abbie Walsh of Bunclody; the Under-16 boys between Luke Hunt of Kilmore against the winner, Cillian Byrne of Cleariestown; and finally the Under-12 boys between Ben Sinnott of New Ross and the winner, Owen Cheevers of Kilmore.

The doubles competition took place on Thursday at Hillbrook Tennis Club in Enniscorthy, and there was a wonderful atmosphere of playing fun tennis on beautiful courts in nice weather.

However, as sometimes happens with tennis, the last match, the girls Under-16, kept on going, with Peig Delaney and Katie Galavan of New Ross beating Aoibhe McSweeney and Rebecca Kavanagh of Bunclody.

Many thanks to the Chairman, Donal O’Brien, and members of Hillbrook for use of the courts.

This year match afternoons were started on Thursdays and were very successful.

Children came along and paid an extra €3 to play matches, and this showed on finals day, so it is hoped to extend this to other afternoons next year.

Prizes were presented at the Tennis and Boat Club by the Mayor, Councillor Jim Moore, who is a great supporter of tennis in Kilmore and at the Bridgetown Schools Completion Programme.

Jim arrived exactly at 1.45 p.m., right on schedule, which was a great achievement for all the coach referees in such difficult weather conditions.

Jim was very complimentary to each individual child, and then presented the Liam Kennedy Cup to New Ross coaches Bill Crowdle and Gary Murphy for the venue with the most wins.

All children and parents are very welcome to the Tennis and Boat Club for the Rocket Broadband August weekend Senior competition. Drop in at any time over the three days.
