NEW ROSS SENIORS (CONTINUED)

Anyone still requiring a spot on a team, please contact Jamesie Murphy on 085-1846172/051-421151 or e-mail jamesiemurphy@gmail.com as soon as possible.

Teams and tee-times will be announced at our normal outing this Thursday, August 3. The all-in fee including donation for extra prizes is only €20. On the draw board for August are John Murphy, Willie Whitty and Brian Dolan.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery go to Luke Power after his unfortunate accident which left him hospitalised, and also to Eddie Keher who is recovering well after his recent hip operation.

On a sadder note, the sympathy of the Seniors group goes to the family of the late Johnny Fleming who was a valued member for a long number of years. Sympathy as well goes to Tommy Grennan on the recent death of his sister, Alice O’Hanlon.

NEW ROSS LADIES

Last Wednesday, July 26, a great turn-out played for the President J.J. Hoyne’s prize to the ladies. Scores were very close which added to the excitement!

Many thanks to J.J. for the lovely prizes and remember, his special night will be next Sunday, August 6, when everybody is welcome to attend. The mixed event will take place on Thursday afternoon, August 3.

Best wishes J.J. for a great fest of golf this week, and we hope that the sun shines for you!

Eighteen-hole stroke: 1, Liz Bennett (9), 72 nett; 2, Mary O’Leary (13), 72 nett (last nine); gross, Mary Kavanagh, 85; 3, Teresa Byrne (20), 72 nett; 4, Joan Foley (32), 73 nett.

The August 2 Wednesday competition is once again sponsored by Joyce’s Homecare. Thank you to Ian, Ann and Arthur for your continued support. The format is 18-hole v. par which is a change from stableford but an excellent game to focus the mind on each shot! There is also a Senior prize on offer this Wednesday.

The club matchplay should be well under way with deadlines being adhered to.

As usual the Tuesday afternoon fourball is open to all members so please support the club by competing on a Tuesday.

The nine-hole ladies’ competition is ongoing. Put your names in the book and pop your entry fee in the locker.

The Mary McKenna panel is now preparing for the Leinster final versus Royal Tara. The first leg, the away game, is arranged for August 10 at 1.30 p.m. in the Co. Meath venue. This leaves very little time for practice matches so players on the panel are reminded to arrange these ASAP.

We will be playing blue to red as Royal Tara has three nine-hole courses. Their website features a great video for supporters to familiarise themselves with the course before the game.

The home leg of this competition has to be played before August 27 but all the focus now is on August 10. Best of luck to all the panel members and the two managers, Liz and Jacqui, in the run-up to this exciting contest.

This date coincides with the first day of the club classic so ladies involved or travelling to support are urged to contribute to the fundraiser by playing on any of the following three-day options. All timesheets are open on the B.R.S.

Our gents on the South Leinster team came up against some serious opposition in an on-form New Ross on Sunday week so we will have no further involvement in that particular competition, but well done to our lads who had gone so far.

On the club competition front some of our young guns have again been to the fore, with Ross Steedman winning the John Coone-sponsored v. par competition, and last weekend young Max Wright won on Saturday in the Johnstone’s Paints singles.

Lee Quigley won his match on the 18th having being three down earlier. James Morrissey lost a tight match on the 19th, with Joe Delaney losing on the 18th. David Mernagh played some very good golf but unfortunately came up against a Portarlington opponent who played some fantastic golf. Hard luck to all players and to the management team of Denis Dunbar and P.J. Murphy.

The bank holiday weekend will be a busy one for our two remaining teams still in competition. First up will be the Provincial Towns team which is due to play away to Headfort in the first leg of the final with the first players off at 11 a.m. on Sunday in the Co. Meath venue.
