GENERAL NEWS

The clubhouse played host to two very important occasions recently when two weddings were held here on two consecutive days. First up was club member Johnny Fox who married Gillian Moran with 70 guests in attendance. This was a first as it was a civil ceremony and the first to be held on the premises. Guests came from afar as England, Scotland and many from Dublin.

The plan was to have the ceremony on the practise putting green but alas the weather had a say so they had it on the balcony instead. Second up was Adrianne Oram and Shane Kirwan, son of club stalwart Tom, who also had a civil ceremony but in Enniscorthy Castle and held their reception for 60 guests in the clubhouse. Guests were from England and Cork.

The men’s golf committee are cleaning up this week with competition secretary Paddy Hore winning the Ladies and Gents Open and secretary Jim Doran getting a hole in one on the 12th in the Dunnes Stores sponsored two person team event last weekend. Well done lads.

The club singles competitions have reached the semi final stage and all games are to be completed by September 17. Ould buddies Philip Browne and Joe Delaney are in one semi and Nicky Murphy and Paul Cosgrave are in the other. Nicky Murphy won this last year, is his name on it again? The club fourball competition has also reached the quarter final stage with all games due to be completed by September 3.

All club fundraisers for the foreseeable future will have the profits ringfenced to replace the first green. Your support at all such fundraisers would be much appreciated.

Friday, September 1, a team of ladies headed to Borris to play in the Borris Trophy.

The morning was beautiful and regardless of the golf it was a delight to be out on the course. Our ladies lost by the narrowest margin.

Well done everybody and thank you to the ladies of Borris Golf Club for hosting such a delightful event.

Saturday, September 2, dawned with mounting excitement among the ladies of the club.

Our Challenge Cup team lead by our Lady President Marcella Jones made their way to Tramore for the Mid East District Finals.

A bus load of supporters arrives to cheer on the team and be part of the event. The opposition on the day were the ladies from Mullingar Golf Club.

The team of Clare Kinsella, Rosie Maher, Tina Smith, Janice McDonald and Mary Cooper though nervous set off from the first tee with a fierce determination.

The matches ebbed and flowed with holes being won and lost by both sides.

As the matches reached the concluding holes it was all very tight and the tension was felt by one and all.

To the delight of all our team and supporters Courtown emerged with a victory. Lady President on accepting a plaque and a pennant from the ILGU officials praised her team, the supporters and is looking forward to the All Ireland finals in Malone at the end of September.

Well done to all involved and good luck in Malone.
