1 MAN ABOUT TOWN: A celebration of the life and times of the late music promoter Barry Ennis is to due to take place at the Riverside Park Hotel in Wexford at 8 p.m. on Friday, September 15, the tribute featuring musicians including Mick Flannery, Declan O’Rourke, Cathy Davey, Gordon Barry, The Man Whom and Eleanor McEvoy, all of whom Barry befriended and worked with over the years. Special guest master of ceremonies on the night will be Barry’s friend and author Eoin Colfer and proceeds will go to the Wexford mental health awareness organisation Community Minds and Wexford MarineWatch, a charity close to Barry’s heart. The tribute features a lot of the musicians who took part in his first big event - the ‘Acoustic Picnic’ at the Irish National Heritage Park back in 2012. As the founder of the Wexford Spiegeltent Festival and events manager for The Set Theatre, Barry worked with many of Ireland’s top acts. 2 HOOK HEAD CYCLE SPORTIVE: Hook Lighthouse will provide the dramatic starting and finishing point for the Hook Head Sportive on Sunday. There are two cycles, a 27km and a 50km which start at 10 a.m. Riders of all abilities are welcome to take part in what is always a fantastic area to cycle in. Online entries close at 3 p.m. on Friday and the cost through the online booking system is €20 for the 50km cycle and €15 for the 27km cycle. The cost on the day is €20 for both races. The sportive will raise money for the Helen Blake lifeboat replica project which will see a replica of the famous RNLI vessel housed in Fethard-on-Sea. See www.HookPeninsula.com/things-to-do.
3 ANIMAL SCULPTURE WORKSHOP: Join Wexfordbased sculptor Imogen Stafford at the Irish National Heritage Park on Saturday, September 16, as she takes time out from creating her mythological Creatures on display at the Botanic Gardens in Dublin to share her craft. Participants will cut, gradually bend, twist, manipulate and build up the wire to find the animal within. The cost is €80. Book on 9120733.
4 TABLE QUIZ: A jersey signed by Wexford hurling manager Davy Fitzgerald is among the prizes on offer at a table quiz being held at the Horse & Hound Hotel in Ballinaboola on Friday at 8.30 p.m. There will be several valuable prizes up for grabs on the night including the jersey. All money raised at the event will be used for the local GAA Club. The cost for a table for four players is €40 and everyone is invited to come along.
5 LOCAL SONG PROJECT: Traditional singer Aileen Lambert will facilitate a new project focusing on exploring local songs and unaccompanied traditional singing in Kilmuckridge. Starting this Wednesday, September 13 from 7.30 p.m. in Bridie Hammel’s Pub this project will take place over the course of a number of weeks. Local songs such as the Tinneaberna Fisherman will be researched and performed as part of the project and at the end a booklet will be produced along with videos featuring local songs and local singers. 6 BOOK READING: Local author Shane Dunphy will give a reading in Enniscorthy Library on Thursday, September 14, at 7 p.m. Shane who is an award winning author, journalist and social science lecturer will read from his first crime novel, After She Vanished. The book which is published by Hachette is based on an idea that Shane has as a college student some 25 years ago. Shane has previously written a series of nine books which were inspired by the tragic stories he encountered in the course of his work including Little Boy Lost and Boy in the Cupboard.
7 ANTIQUES FAIR: There will be a two day antiques fair in Wells House, Gorey this weekend. Taking place on both Saturday, September 16 and Sunday, September 17, this is a unique opportunity for antique lovers to get their hands on some quality antiques. Wells House will play host to Chantal Fortune who will oversee the event with her vast knowledge and expertise of all this antique. Those attending will be able to immerse themselves in the beautiful Tudor Gothic architecture and be transported back to the past with its beautiful interiors, wares and wonders. Entry to the fair is €3 per person.
