TIDY TOWNS

Kilmuckridge Tidy Towns are delighted to announce a new project facilitated by traditional singer Aileen Lambert which will focus on exploring local songs and unaccompanied traditional singing.

The Kilmuckridge area is rich in local ballads which will be researched and performed and part of the project. These include songs of the sea such as the Tinneabearna Fisherman and songs about local people such as world champion weight thrower John Mangan.

Participants will also be encouraged to develop their song repertoire with Aileen helping them to pick traditional songs which suit their style of singing and interest ballads, nonsense songs, humorous songs, love songs etc. Participants do not necessarily need to have lots of singing experience; as long as you have an interest in the project you are most welcome.

Think you might be interested? Aileen will present an introduction to the project on Wednesday, September 13, from 7.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. in Joe and Bridie Hammel’s Lounge, Kilmuckridge. The project will begin the following week and run for six weeks. It is intended to produce a booklet and also to shoot videos featuring local songs and local singers as part of the project.

Do you know a local song? Aileen would particularly like to collect any local songs in the area. These may be old or newly composed songs, perhaps written in praise of a local person, place or event. As Aileen also has experience composing new airs she would also be interested in any recitations or verse written locally which could be adapted to become a song.
