Society packs plenty of history into its Cork outing

-

There’s very little time for shopping or relaxing spa treatments when you go on a weekend trip with North Wexford Historical Society.

Chairman Peter O’Connor made sure to pack the schedule to the brim for the 42 members who travelled. Having left Gorey on the Saturday morning, they had seen Dungarvan Castle and the heritage town of Cobh by lunchtime, and they went on to Kinsale in the afternoon, before heading for Ballincollig where they stayed overnight.

The historic sites kept coming on Sunday, and they visited Kilmichael where Tom Barry carried out a famed War of Independence ambush in 1920, and then on to Béal na Bláth where Michael Collins met his end.

The day continued in North Cork with a visit to Doneraile Court, a 17th Century estate with historic links to the St Ledger family, which includes fine examples of early landscaping and walled gardens. They returned home through the Blackwater Valley and picturesque Lismore, with dinner in Dungarvan before returning home late on Sunday evening.

The tour was led by Peter, with the input of local guides along the way, and contributions by some of the members, during what was a very enjoyable weekend.

North Wexford Historical Society resumes its monthly talks in Gorey Library shortly. Members of the public are always welcome to attend, and the Society also welcomes new members at any time.
