Open Day for young would-be thespians

-

COUNTY Wexford Youth Theatre is looking for new members and is to hold an open day at their base at the Youth Arts Studio in Pinewood Business Park at 1 p.m. on Saturday (September 23).

‘We love these open days every year,’ said artistic director Tony McCleane-Fay.

‘It gives us an opportunity to meet new potential members and for those interested to see what we are about. It’s actually more like a big theatre workshop, where new young people get to work with existing members,’ he said.

Would-be members aged between 12 and 23 are invited to attend the open day about the youth theatre which has grown from strength-to-strengh since its formation in 2003 by Wexford County Council, the Arts Council and Bare Cheek Theatre Company.

During that time, the theatre has staged 32 productions in Wexford, Dublin, Galway, Cork and Wicklow. ‘When we first set up the youth theatre with the Arts Department of Wexford County Council, we never dreamed it would become so popular or successful,’ said Tony.

‘We’ve had hundreds of young people join us down through the years and many have gone on to work professionally as actors, directors, stage management and writers. It really is a testament to the council’s commitment to youth arts that they continue to fund and support County Wexford Youth Theatre.’

The company, which runs three age appropriate groups every Saturday, had had a busy year, having already staged four new productions in Wexford Arts Centre in May, another new play in New Ross and Wexford in April and their current production ‘Enemy’.

‘We are a very busy organisation, staging at least three productions per year in Wexford and beyond. We are part of Youth Theatre Ireland and our members attend many events organized by them during the year,’ said Tony.

The youth theatre’s members also go on trips to places including London, Germany, Portugal and Romania to perform and share culture.

‘We don’t just cater for actors, some of our members write and direct too, so it’s a full theatre experience in CWYT.’ Parents are welcome to attend the open day with their children. For further details contact Monika on 0871316925 or email barecheektheatre@gmail.com.
