Motorist involved in crash had outstanding warrants

-

A 41-YEAR-OLD holiday maker ran into more than a parked jeep when he was involved in a road accident at Springmount in Gorey on August 29.

Thomas Cummins was brought before the District Court the following day, to plead guilty to careless driving and driving without insurance.

He offered an address at 86 Greenfort Crescent in Clondalkin, where his brother lives, but he was now resident in Liverpool.

Judge Miriam Walsh learned that after he was arrested at the scene of the accident, outstanding warrants for his arrest came to light.

These related to an allegation that he drove without insurance in 2004 and that he was caught in possession of an imitation firearm in 2005.

Cummins’ defence was that he had not been home to Ireland since 2002.

However, when Sergeant Gary Rayner produced a picture of the man arrested in 2005, he conceded ‘that was me’.

Cummins was remanded in custody on the old charges, to appear in due course at a court sitting in Dublin.

He was sentenced to three months jail for the motor insurance offence.

The court learned that the jeep was worth around €700 and that there was no one in it when the collision occurred.

No one was injured in the accident.
