Quay in ‘poor state of repair’ – Lawlor

CONCERN was expressed at last week’s meeting of Wexford County Council that the refurbishment of Wexford quay will be delayed.

Cllr George Lawlor said the quayfront is in a ‘pretty poor state of repair’ in several parts.

Director of Services for Economic Development Tony Larkin said the section of the quay from Crescent Quay up along by the Talbot Hotel will be worked on. This is where the Trinity Wharf office, hotel and leisure development is planned.

€1m in funding has been secured for the works, with the local authority allocating €1m of its funds for the project.

Mr Larkin said a €1m grant has been sourced for the Crescent Quay to Talbot hotel stretch of the quayfront.

Architects Scott Tallon Walker have completed the draft report on the economic development and spatial implementation plan for the quay front.

The plan is being revised this month and will go before councillors next month.

Cllr Lawlor said the quay is a ‘ticking timebomb’ as many events are held there and a lot of money is generated on the quayfront.

Mr Larkin said he is aware that several parts of the quay are degrading, adding that this will be addressed.

He has asked the engineer oveseeing the works to concentrate on the southern end of the quay.

A decision has to be made about whether to replace the existing boardwalk or change it.
