ENNISCORTHY LADIES

Our fourball competition on Tuesday was sponsored by Counterpoint Ireland. Our ladies were keen to take to the fairways with most of them playing in the morning, which saw the best weather of the day.

COURTOWN

Due to all the work which had to be undertaken on the course during the week, it has been a quiet week competition-wise, but it has to be said that from an initial point of view it appears that the work will be of great benefit to the continuous drainage which has been ongoing for the last few years.

The course has been sanded and the greens have been hollow-cored, and this is a small price which we have to pay for the quality of our course that we enjoy throughout the rest of the year.

On Saturday afternoon the teams for the Colman Doyle-sponsored winter league were posted in the clubhouse. Things could not have worked out better for the competitions committee, with 96 players having registered for the competition which gave us a convenient twelve teams of eight.

Players will play in singles format and the best six cards from each team will decide the outcome each week. It will be important that all cards be returned after each round of the league.

The winter league is set to start on Sunday, October 1. On Saturday when we had played our golf I joined my playing partners in the bar for some food and refreshments and I have to say that we were entertained for some time by a group of gentlemen from Seapoint Rugby Club who had been golfing with us in Courtown as part of a society.

It was an experience to just sit and listen to four men on guitars, tin whistle and harmonica, they really were amazing. We can only hope that they will visit us again when maybe we could organise a bit of competition from some of our members.

Medal competition, Sunday, September 10: 1, Vincent Kearney (22), 72 (last nine); 2, Cillian Hughes (5), 72 (last nine); 3, Colm Kennelly (14), 72; gross, Alan McDonald (1), 76; ladies: 1, Denise Kavanagh (12), 36 points.

The end of the golfing year is in sight and the All-Ireland finals of the I.L.G.U. championship sponsored by AIG take place in Malone Golf Club, Belfast, starting on Wednesday, September 27.

Our Challenge Cup team members have made it to the play-off. What an absolutely fantastic achievement.

The team, managed by lady President Marcella Jones, has played through games against Kilkenny, Gowran, Wexford, Carrick-on-Suir, and Mullingar in the District final.

On Thursday, September 28, the biggest game to date will be against Malahide for a place in the quarter-finals. Should the team be lucky enough to win on Thursday, they proceed to the quarter-final match on Friday. The finals will be played on Saturday.

This is a huge undertaking for our ladies. The logistics of organising accommodation for team and caddies in Belfast for possibly three nights has given our Honorary Secretary a headache or two. These problems have now been overcome.

A convoy of lady Captain, team manager, players and caddies will head up the N11 on Wednesday to practise and view the course before the battle royal begins on Thursday.

The team is Therese Steedman, Clare Kinsella, Rose Maher, Tina Smith and Mary Cooper. The caddies are Catherine Quinn, Kate Sheehan, Sorcha Howell, Maria Coone and Mary Osborne. We wish you all the very best of luck and hope you enjoy the experience.

Because of the many variables attached to this play-off set-up, we appreciate that it is difficult for supporters to plan a trip. We will, however, be delighted and very appreciative of those who can travel to cheer the ladies on in their quest for an All-Ireland title.

We would like extend our very good wishes to Wicklow and Wexford who also have teams representing the District in the finals. Go the sunny south-east.
