Council pledges to prioritise Gorey
Wexford County Council has pledged to prioritise Gorey and North Wexford for the construction of new social housing over the next two years.
Cllr Malcolm Byrne said this week he has received assurances on this from the executive of Wexford County Council.
‘The decision by the government to finally restart a council house building programme will mean that the local authority will shift its focus to construction of new homes rather than simply acquisition,’ he said.
The Council’s housing section is understood to be currently looking at a number of new build possibilities.
‘I’ve been frustrated at the lack of progress in tackling Gorey’s housing crisis but have worked closely with senior staff to identify possible areas of new build,’ said Malcolm. ‘I am now more optimistic that these can come on stream.’
Malcolm added that there hasn’t been a local authority house constructed in the Gorey area in three years, with the last being at Baile na Tra in Riverchapel.
He had previously criticised delays at Baile Eoghain in Gorey town but noted that scheme was back on track. ‘
Every option, including compulsory purchase of land, is now finally being considered,’ he said. ‘I am more optimistic now but will continue to work to ensure delivery on the housing plans that are now being considered.’
Gorey district currently has around 800 people currently on the housing list. In addition, the latest Gorey Town Plan projects a need for at least 1,300 new housing units for the town over the next six years.
