Mel makes all the right moves to win Cathal Kelly Cup

ALL the right moves were showcased at the club championsh­ips of Gorey Chess Club recently.

A total of 18 players took part in the popular event over the last month.

After five rounds victory went to local man Mel O Cinneide. Mel who is an Irish internatio­nal chess player emerged as a very deserving winner with a 100 per cent score of /5.

Mel is the first winner of the Cathal Kelly cup named after club member Cathal who died earlier this year.

The Cathal Kelly Cup was presented to Mel by Tadhg Kelly, Cathal’s father and retired principal of Tara Hill National School.

Club stalwart Eddie Humphrey achieved second place with 4/5. There was a tie between four players - Manuel Gardenes, Liam Hearns, John Lacy, all of whom are former champions and David Remenyik on 3.5/5.

Thanks were extended to everyone who took part in the competitio­n making it a very closely contested and enjoyable event. Thanks were also given to Mel O’Cinneide and Tamas Remenyik for the smooth running of the tournament.

Gorey Chess Club meet every Monday evening from 8 p.m. until 10 p.m. in the Loch gCarman Arms, Main Street, Gorey. There is a warm welcome for everyone no matter what their standard of play or even if they are complete beginners. There is no need to bring sets as sets are provided. Ask for Seamus on arrival.
