Busy weekend at Park Lane

-

THE IMPENDING storm did nothing to deter players and supporters to attend Wexford Wanderers grounds at Park Lane last weekend.

On Saturday morning, a normally bustling grounds was even more so with the Wexford town club hosting a minis blitz (Under-6 to Under-12) which welcomed over 500 of our youngest sports stars from Wexford, Arklow, New Ross and Enniscorthy.

An additional four youth games and two away games took place on Saturday for age groups 1317. The Under-17s beat Carlow 58-10, and the Under-13s beat Enniscorthy 24-5.

A very special mention to all parents and volunteers who ensured that it was safe, and that all children were fed and watered. Another blitz for minis is being hosted this weekend and all are welcome to support.

Sunday was dominated by the club’s Senior sides with three home games. First up were the women’s Senior Vixens who played host to Greystones in their fourth Leinster League game of the season.

The teams last met at the annual Casey Cup in May and, though Greystones would have liked to have evened the score, after a tough contest, it was the home side who took away the win again 19-10.

Tries for Wexford were scored by Máire Rowe (two) and newcomer Rhona Julian. Two of the three were converted by out-half Siobhán Cloake.

While the women dominated the front pitch, around the back Wexford’s second 15 took on Arklow’s seconds in a friendly, though not friendly enough to let the visiting side over the line.

The home team were incredibly strong with tries for Cárthaigh Geoghegan (two), Kevin Redmond

Owen Cardiff (three), Alan Kinsella, Aidan Stewart and Roger Duggan (two). The referee called time a little early with a score of Wexford 75, Arklow 0.

Finally, the Senior first XV also met Arklow but this time in a Leinster League game. Again the home team were far superior, allowing just a single three-point score to the travelling 15.

The visiting side found the pressure too much to handle and their discipline suffered, resulting in a penalty try for Wexford as well as a separate yellow and then red card for the Arklow outside centre.

The penalty try was joined by several other tries by John Rowe, Will Morris, Callan Murphy, Eoin Roche and Richie Waters as well as some great kicking by Tom Hudson, ending the day and the weekend with a 69-3 win.
