Pool spinathon raises €9k for Cycle Against Suicide

- By FINTAN LAMBE

THEY say many hands make light work, but in this case it was many legs that made the 24-hour pool-bike spinathon in Club Amber a runaway success.

Teams of volunteers took turns in the pool keeping a squad of 13 pool-bikes in non-stop motion from 9 a.m. on a Saturday to 9 a.m. on a Sunday, in the health and fitness club at the Amber Springs Hotel, Gorey.

The ‘Making a Splash Against Suicide’ event was organised to raise funds for, and awareness of, the work of Cycle Against Suicide, and it certainly paid off. A cheque for €9,350 was last week presented to Cycle Against Suicide CEO Glen Reid, and local volunteers, by some of those involved in the effort.

Hotel manager Eibhear Coyle said they were thrilled with how the event went. ‘A massive thank you to everyone who came, donated, and pool-biked their way across the 24 hours,’ he said.

He paid particular to event organiser and Club Amber manager Anthony Kelly who ‘worked tirelessly to ensure the event was the success it was.’

‘Well done to our Amber staff who participated, our local guards, firefighters and businesses whose staff got involved in this unique and successful event,’ added Eibhear. ‘Our hope is that this becomes an annual event so please watch out for details!’ The event was also supported by local champion boxer Basil Kennedy, members of the local Polish community, and members of local sports clubs.
