New superintendent is off to a very busy start
THE new superintendent for the Enniscorthy and Gorey garda district has a strong background in crime investigation.
A native of Ballinakill, Co Laois, Supt Gerry McGrath took up the post on November 13 last. He has 35 years of service under his belt, 28 of which were focusing on crime in Dublin city. He was promoted from detective inspector to superintendent two years ago, and then served in Baltinglass before the move to Enniscorthy.
Supt McGrath is the third superintendent to hold the post in the last 12 months. His predecessor Supt John Gordon replaced Supt Liam White in December 2016.
He said he is very familiar with the North Wexford area and is delighted with the move to the district. ‘I’m looking forward to the challenge,’ he said. ‘It’s what I wanted.’
Though based in Enniscorthy, he has already visited the Gorey office on a number of occasions to get to know the personnel and staff there. He said he intends to continue his regular visits to the station as Gorey is ‘a busy spot.’
He said his priorities of course centre around tackling all aspects of crime, but he will also focus on building strong relationships between the gardaí and the community, and being there to support the community.
His first two weeks got off to a very busy start with a major operation targeting crime and outstanding bench warrants in the Gorey and Enniscorthy areas, with a special focus on cracking down on the sale of drugs.
