Science project award scooped by Gorey company

-

A GOREY firm recently picked up a top accolade for its underwater analysis project at the ESB Engineers Ireland Excellence awards in Dublin. Apex Geoservices Ltd received the Geoscience Ireland award which recognises exceptional achievement in design or the delivery of projects which require significant geo-scientific expertise.

The Apex applied research project, conducted in co-operation with joint winner, the UCD school of civil engineering, involves an ‘underwater multichannel analysis of surface waves.’ The technique for remotely measuring the stiffness of sea bottom sediments has been developed to provide valuable information for engineers involved in the design of subsea foundations for pipelines, oil rigs and wind turbines.

Apex was founded in 2001 by Peter O’Connor and Dr Yvonne O’Connell, and provides specialist geophysical surveying surveys to the engineering, environmental and natural resource industries in Ireland, the UK, and further afield. It employs a staff of 12 from its office at Knockmullen, Gorey.

Contracts manager Kevin Galvin said they were delighted with the win. ‘The award is a tribute to the technical ability of Apex geoscientists and UCD engineers, and is an excellent example of co-operation between industry and academia in carrying out successful applied research,’ he said.
