Work to start soon on nine social houses

-

CONTRACTS were signed at the Gorey Municipal District meeting last week for nine social houses in Baile Eoghain, Gorey, with works expected to start next month.

Housing officer Padraig O’Gorman from Wexford County Council told the councillors about the plan of work.

He also revealed that 10 new social houses are planned for Creagh and are going to tender soon, and that work will hopefully commence in the first quarter of 2018.

He also added that they are exploring the options for seeking to take back possession of the site which was formerly home to St Joseph’s NS on Wexford Street, and to develop it for 14 social houses.

Welcoming the news of the nine social houses in Baile Eoghain, Cllr Pip Breen said he was happy that Paddy Berry from Bawn Development was getting the job.

‘We have four vacant council houses in Gorey at the moment,’ said chairman Cllr Joe Sullivan. ‘Can I ask we do something about this as it does not look good when we are in the middle of a housing crisis.’

Mr O’Gorman agreed with Cllr Sullivan, and Cllr Robbie Ireton added there are lots of vacant houses in Gorey. ‘They do not belong to the council,’ said Cllr Ireton. ‘But they are privately owned homes which have been abandoned and it would be great to get people into them. It is hard to see them as they are all overgrown.’

Speaking about the housing crisis, Cllr Malcolm Byrne complimented Mr O’Gorman on the great work he was doing with moving projects over the line and getting the work done.
