Those elected were: lady President, Róisín Leahy; lady Captain, Trish Hanton; lady Vice-Captain, Martina Gately; Honorary Secretary, Bernie Power; Honorary Treasurer, Tracy Ryan; Handicap Secretary, Mary Fallon; ex-officio, Una Doherty; Competitions Secretary, Jane Duignan; P.R.O., Susan Kelly; committee: Tara Dunne, Ena Donoghue, Anne Conway, Louise Boshoff, Marie Connell.

To the ladies leaving the committee, thank you for all your hard work and dedication to the club over the years, namely Denise Dunne, Marie Byrne, Rita Douglas, Trish Boyd and Ruth Kennedy.

This year’s Christmas party is on Friday, December 8, and the table plan is available in the locker room.

This week’s competition on Thursday, November 30, is a 14-hole three-person team event; no pressure, but it is a choker format.

ROSSLARE LADIES

It will be a busy week for the ladies at Rosslare Golf Club, with a twelve-hole winter competition on Tuesday, Senior competition on Thursday, the ladies’ A.G.M. on Friday, the weekly fourball on Saturday, and the ladies’ alternative day on Sunday.

Today (Tuesday, November 28) is the first twelve-hole competition this winter, with the format being a waltzing rumble with a scoring pattern of 1-2-3 repeated four times. We all look forward to this fun event.

Weather conditions were wet and windy last Tuesday (November 21), discouraging most of the ladies from venturing to the first tee-box. However, some ladies did play a few holes but there was no official competition.

Ladies, remember to spend all remaining monies in your Pro Shop account before the final deadline of December 31 - one month remaining!

Last Saturday’s fourball was well supported with 13 pairs playing in the ladies’ section - only one prize. Well done to Mary O’Shaughnessy (14/10) and Mary Frances Codd (20/14) with a score of 32 points, each receiving an in-house voucher to the value of €25, but also an extra -1 taken from their winter handicap for Saturday fourballs.

We look forward to our annual ladies’ Christmas party and prizegiving this Friday (December 1) in the clubhouse. It will be a wonderful night to be enjoyed by all - a delicious festive meal prepared by Siobhán and Dave, the clubhouse caterers, with prize-giving throughout the evening followed by music and dancing.

Next Tuesday (December 5) is our second twelve-hole competition - the format being ladies’ singles stableford. We thank our sponsor: keen golfer and club stalwart, Bridget Doyle, La Cuisine, Main Street, Wexford, for her very kind and generous donation of homemade Christmas cake for first prize and homemade plum pudding for second prize. Best of luck to everyone!

That evening, the ladies’ A.G.M. will be held in the clubhouse at 7.30 p.m. sharp. We look forward to seeing everyone there. Please support our sponsors.

Saturday, November 18, ladies’ fourball, 16 holes: 1, Mary O’Shaughnessy (14/10) and Mary Frances Codd (20/14), 32 points.

ROSSLARE

Team of three rumble, turkey, 14-hole: 1,JimDoyle (10), Kevin Foran (11), Bill Underwood (18), 63 points; 2, Paud O’Brien (3), Tom McGrath (16), Robin Gardner (17), 60 points.

Burrow twelve-hole singles: points.

TAGHMON SOCIETY

1, Davy Rowe (20), 30

The society played Enniscorthy G.C. on November 25, and 25 players turned up on a cool and frosty morning.

After a course inspection we were let loose. Numbers were down from the usual 40+ due to a G.A.A. game, and a few others had their own reasons for not being able to attend.

This was a three-person scramble team event, something we haven’t done for a few years, so with teams drawn at random the competition began.

Results: 1, Frank Kennedy, Rory Murphy and Noel Wall (the ould war horse managed to get a few scores in!), 90; 2, Denis Banville, Barry McGrath and Jason White, 87; 3, Tom Delaney, Seán Sexton and Derek Southam, 85.

It was great to see a few new names in there. There was only the one winner of the twos club, smiley Declan Clarke yet again. He even brought along his own fan club and appreciation society so he had someone to talk to, winning €50 and promptly buying a drink for the entire bar. Thomas Whitty won the lottery bonus ball.

The next outing is in Rosslare G.C. for a twelve-hole game to start off a long day on December 16. Tee-times start at 9.30 a.m., and than it’s all back to the home base of Alice Brady’s for presentations, golfer of the year, the announcement of next year’s Captain - I wonder just who it could be? - and of course our annual draw. As usual let a committee member know whether you are playing or not. Bring along a friend as a visitor.

And with that fellow golfers I will bid you all adieu as I am announcing my retirement. That could be a relief for a few of you. This is my last report after six years of being the society Secretary and P.R.O., more than enough for anyone.

Can I keep the T-shirt Joe? I won’t be in attendance at the Rosslare outing due to a prior engagement (only the third outing that I have missed in eleven years), so somebody else may report on the day’s proceedings.

For those of you that were at last year’s A.G.M., you will remember that I wanted to stand down then but was literally railroaded into doing it for another year. So I am using this opportunity to give plenty of notice to canvass for a replacement rather than announcing it at the A.G.M.

I have served under six Captains and the first one was the worst! Goodbye and thank you for reading my erudite, verbose yet witty ramblings over the years and I hope you were at least kept informed and find an even better replacement! Now I can finally concentrate on my golf and start winning again.

NEW ROSS

Typical November weather and heavy going was the story for the second round of the winter league. There was a big turn-out of players, all anxious to post a good score and maintain their interest in the competition.

Leading the field home was Seamus Phelan (13) with a cracking 34 points for the 14 holes played. Hot on his heels in second place came Philip Lynch (15) with 33 points, whilst Fabian Flood (11) finished third with 32 points. The gross prize with 29 points went to the ultra-consistent Derek Ronan.

Category 1 saw Eamon Wall (7) take that prize with 32 points. Category 2 was won by Martin Murphy (15) with 31 points, and a similar score (31 points) after a countback over the last three holes gave Category 3 to John Joe Cullen (19).

The popular turkey/ham competition over nine holes is going strong, and the latest winner was James O’Brien with 20 points. You can enter any day for €4 with a re-entry of only €2.

More support is needed for the Split The Pot fundraiser, and all members should take part as you have a chance of winning a nice few Euro in time for Christmas.

The recent A.G.M. of the Men’s section was well attended, and the officers for the coming year were elected. Outgoing Captain, Peter Goggin, thanked all his fellow committee members and all the various departments for their help during his tenure of office in 2017.

In these challenging times for all golf clubs, he stressed the need for all to pull together both on and off the course to secure the future of the club in the years ahead.

He wished the incoming committee every success in 2018. Incoming Captain, Martin Carroll, and incoming President, Harry Rheinhart, re-echoed these sentiments in their contributions and said they would strive to continue to do their very best in the interests of the club.

The following officers were elected for 2018: Captain, Martin Carroll; Vice-Captain, Bill Hurley; President, Harry Rheinhart; Secretary, Davy Doran; Competition Secretary/ Treasurer, Donal Hosey; Handicap Secretary, John Howlin; Committee: Ger Roan, Paul Goff, Eddie Kent, Rory Hussey and ex-officio, Peter Goggin.

NEW ROSS SENIORS

Torrential rain on Wednesday stretching into the night gave little hope for our weekly outing scheduled for Thursday. But a drying overnight wind meant that the course was open for business as usual even though the going was heavy in places.

Thankfully, we enjoyed cold but dry conditions and we even had some pleasant winter sunshine as well. Eleven teams went out in the popular champagne scramble and scoring was excellent considering the conditions, even with the bunkers out of play.

Ten of the eleven teams that started brought in scores well over the 90 points target and it even took a countback to find the eventual winners. Scoring 50 points against 45 on the back nine, the team of Tom Murphy (16), Pat Traynor (16), Frank Boyle (20) and Richie Byrne (22) were declared winners with 98 points.

On the same score and in second place came John Kennedy (15), Larry Shannon (20), Robert O’Dwyer (21) and Colin Casey (22). Third place went to Mikey Lee (18), Tony Redmond (18), Seán O hUginn (20) and Jim Kehoe (25) with 95 points. Nearest the pin prize on the eleventh hole went to Richie Byrne, with nobody within shooting distance on the ninth hole.

We hold our A.G.M. next Thursday at 9 a.m. sharp and hope to conclude for our usual golfing start at 10 a.m. All please note that this starting time will be in operation for the winter months, with the draw for teams at 9.40 a.m. sharp - no latecomers admitted.

We will also continue with a champagne scramble every week from now on until summer rules come back into force and playing off the green or forward markers. For the older brigade this is a more enjoyable format as it brings everyone into the game and makes for a pleasant round of golf for all.

Our Christmas outing and dinner is pencilled in for Thursday, December 7, where the all-in fee is €20. All intending to participate should bring that amont along next Thursday, November 30.

NEW ROSS LADIES

Rain put an end to Wednesday’s golf but we live in hope that next week will be more clement. A turkey competition over 14 holes is on offer with booking online and a morning draw only. There is no afternoon draw.

The presentation to the winners of these turkey competitions will be at our Christmas evening on Wednesday, December 13, at 5.30 p.m.

The format for Christmas fun golf on December 13 will be a three-person scramble over nine holes, and we hope to include beginners. Names will be taken the week before and a draw for teams will be made on December 6. This competition will only be available on December 13. The weather will be the bother!

Remember, there is an ongoing nine-hole competition too on offer and the winners of that will be included at the presentation on December 13.

For all Sharpen your Short Game participants, there is a copy of ‘Tips for Short Game’ available to you in the Pro Shop. It is a summary of the instruction given at the lessons so there is no excuse for bad chipping and putting from now on!

Congratulations to Anna Murphy and Peter Goggin for their victory recently in the final of the club mixed matchplay over Liz Roberts and Seamus O’Leary. Commiserations to the runners-up who put up a brave battle.

All golf clubs have been notified about the world amateur team championships to be held in Carton House starting August 27, 2018. G.U.I. and I.L.G.U. are recruiting volunteers for this huge event. It will be an opportunity to see big names in golf and to witness them in action. Circulars have already been sent out to you, so follow the link to register included on that e-mail.

It’s great to see our Juniors at golf lessons on Saturdays, girls and boys, and we hope they will continue some Saturday play on the course during the winter. Great credit is due to Mary Kavanagh, Patricia Quinn, Noel Kehoe and Nicholas ‘Junior’ Cashin for their interest and efforts with youngsters. The future is looking good!

Please support Split The Pot. If one hundred members paid in €2 a week we could raise €5,000 for the club .... that would be a huge help folks, so put your name in the pot and you might get lucky too!
