SOCCER NEWS

The men’s teams returned mixed results on Sunday the 19th. with the ‘A’ team winning and the ‘B’ team losing. Playing away, the ‘B’ squad went down heavily to table toppers, Kiltealy Celtic. Involved in a local derby with neighbours St Joseph’s, the A’s collected maximum points and enhanced their goal difference with a 6-1 win. It took half an hour for them to pull ahead thanks to an own goal. By the break they should have had the game well wrapped up but only lead by 1-0. The team was sharper and more focused in the second half and racked up goals with two each from Matthew Dunne and Mark Brady and a sweet score from James Sweeney. Paul ‘Roddy’ Doyle was man-of-thematch, dominating midfield from start to finish.

The previous day the under-15s had a great 4-2 win over New Ross Celtic. Tristan Byrne netted twice and Jason Breen and Fionn Walsh added one apiece. This was a great result considering that the team’s captain, Cormac Walsh was replaced after only 10 minutes due to injury.

The under-14 girls’ team did even better, beating Carnew United by 17-1. Three goals inside the first 10 minutes showed how the game was bound to end and top scorer on the day was Emerson Doran with eight goals. Bronagh Kenny netted five times and Abby Gibbons got two. Sophie Kirwan and Shona Procter-Laird added one each.

The Youths were at home on Saturday the 18th, playing host to Rosslare Rangers. A Darragh Murphy flick had them 1-0 ahead at the interval but Rosslare pulled one back early in the second half. Jack White put out lads ahead shortly afterwards. Jamie DoyleDempsey put the game beyond Rosslare’s reach near the end, curving a long shot to the top corner for the goal of the game. At the other end, Jack Tyrrell pulled off two crucial saves, helping the team to maximum points.
