€400,000 for Gorey area sports clubs

-

MORE THAN €400,000 has been allocated to numerous sports clubs in Gorey and the surrounding district as the government announced last week its Sports Capital Grant scheme.

It was great news for Tara Rock Community Field Trust as they will receive €106,000 from the Sports Capital Grant and also a further €150,000 from Wexford Local Development through Leader funding. The money will be used to build much-needed changing room facilities and they will begin construction on the community centre early next year.

Welcoming the good news, Jim Higgins, committee member of the Tara Rock Community Field Trust, said they were ‘delighted to receive the largest amount in the Sports Capital Grant within the county’. ‘Just want to say a big thanks to Wexford Local Development and to Minister Michael D’Arcy for helping us,’ said Jim. ‘We are now working to do fundraisers to make up the rest of the money we need.’

Other sports clubs in Gorey and surrounding districts who received a sports grant from the government were: Buffers Alley GAA Club, €20,000; Craanford Harriers Athletic Club, €1,000; Gorey Rangers AFC, €46,500; Gorey Tennis Club, €66,000; Kilanerin/Ballyfad GAA Club, €53,500; St Patrick’s Snooker Club, €31,000; Swim Club Courtown, €3,700; and the Clubhouse in Gorey Showgrounds, €40,000.

The funding is for capital projects within clubs and is largely supported through the National Lottery.

Meanwhile, 14 community groups across the county were successful for Leader funding and the recipients stretch from New Ross to Gorey, with a variety of projects being awarded the grant aid through Wexford Local Development, who work in partnership with Wexford County Council.

The money has been provided for the purchase of equipment, build extensions, undertake remedial works and to support the construction of completely new facilities.

‘This funding will greatly help communities in Wexford,’ said Chief Executive Brian Kehoe. ‘We are delighted to have played a part in their journey and wish them every success.’
