Hope Centre visits Gorey

- By FINTAN LAMBE

THE Enniscorthy based Hope Cancer Support Centre has said it is looking at expanding its outreach service to the Gorey area.

Representatives recently held an information evening in Gorey Library which was attended by up to 35 people. Support nurse Bernie Kirwan, said they will bring the feedback to management and the board, so they can consider what can be offered.

Other speakers included support nurse Sharon Groarke, psychotherapist and art therapist Rita Lett, and lymphedema ther- apist Sasha Roche Kelly. Sharon answered questions particularly in relation to the programme for children of a parent or sibling that has had a diagnosis.

‘We offer a certain amount of outreach to people who can’t get down to us,’ said Bernie. ‘There was definitely interest in maybe trying a satellite pilot programme. It’s about seeing what the need is. We have a lot of people coming to us from the whole of Co Wexford and the outlying areas.’

Among the services offered at the Hope Centre in Enniscorthy are: counselling; touch therapies; phone support; support groups for men, women, breast cancer, prostate cancer, lymphedema, and for care givers; prosthesis fitting; wig fitting; meditation; art; and a walking group.

A new driving programme is now offered. Voluntary drivers are now available to be booked to bring people to and from chemotherapy appointments. The centre is also starting a multiple myeloma support group in January.
