Councillors want crossing at school in Riverchapel
DEMAND WAS high from councillors at last week’s Gorey Municipal District meeting to put a pedestrian crossing in Riverchapel outside of the Star of the Sea National School following the incident from two weeks ago.
Cllr Anthony Donoghue requested from District Engineer Neville Shaw ‘to look at putting a crossing in’, as a five-year old boy was knocked down on December 13, as he made his way to school that morning.
‘Refurbishment works are due to take place in Riverchapel next year, so we will definitely look into that,’ said Mr Shaw.
Cllr Fionntán Ó Súilleabhaín said pedestrian crossings and school safety in general needs to be a big priority for 2018.
‘We need bigger plans and one would be a pedestrian crossing, a lollipop warden and some signage to warn motorists that there is a school ahead and to slow down,’ said Cllr Súilleabhaín. ‘Riverchapel needs to be prioritised though, there is a lot more traffic and cars on the road.’
Mr Shaw said there have been a number of incidents in Riverchapel throughout the years, but this recent accident may change future plans and help to get a crossing in.
Cllr Robbie Ireton said he has been going on about getting a lollipop lady and a pedestrain crossing there for years after receiving numerous complaints about the situation.
