HARD-WORKING HOPPER WAS A LOYAL CLUB MAN

-

COMMUNITIES in Shillelagh and Carnew are mourning the sad death of popular local man Robin Jordan.

Robin, known affectionately by the nickname ‘Hopper’, passed away on January 17, just days shy of his 66th birthday.

While he lived in Ballingate, Carnew, in recent years, Robin was a native of Deerpark, Shillelagh, and was very proud of his Wexford roots on his mother’s side.

During his life, Robin worked in many different places in the building trade, including in the UK and America. He also volunteered in Haiti building homes for those displaced in the 2010 earthquake.

Robin’s last job was with Wicklow County Council on the outdoor team covering Carnew, Tinahely and Shillelagh. He retired around a year ago and sadly battled illness until his passing last week. Robin was a great GAA man and was a long-term member of Shillelagh GAA Club, where he had many close friends. He was a footballer and hurler in his younger days but hurling was his preference.

According to Tommy Murphy of Shillelagh GAA Club, Robin was a loyal club man and is very sadly missed by the members.

‘Hopper played both codes for the club but as everyone knew he had a preference for the small ball. Hopper won a number of things with Shillelagh over the years and was captain of the 1984 Junior Hurling Championship winning team and we are reliably informed that this was his proudest moment in a Shillelagh jersey,’ he said.

‘Off the field he could always be relied upon for a good yarn or tune and always supported the club in relation to fundraising activities, indeed for our annual golf classic, the guitar was just as important to bring as well as the actual golf clubs,’ said Mr Murphy.

Robin was laid to rest in Shillelagh on Friday, January 19. He is survived by his partner Caroline, children Robert, Mark, Tracey, Shane, David and Anne, grandchildren Kyle, Jack, Josh, Robyn, Emily, Chloe and Lewis, brother Paddy, sister Marie, uncle Kevin, nephews, nieces, sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends. May he rest in peace.
