Pupils face off in chess battles

THE SPRING 2018 Chess Tournament for primary school children was held in the Brandon House Hotel recently.

A total of 98 children from various schools in County Wexford participat­ed in the popular event. All children played seven games during the day.

The overall winner of the tournament with a perfect 7/7 score was Sarah Kenny of Piercestow­n National School. Peter Kenny also of Piercestow­n National School and Dan Nolan of Duncannon shared second place on a very impressive score of 6.5/7.

The prize for best school was won by Piercestow­n National School closely followed by New Ross with St Joseph’s School Gorey in third place.

There were also prizes for under age categories. The overall tournament winner, Sarah Kenny was also the winner of the Under 13 section. Conor Langtry and Shay Byrne, both from St Joseph’s School, Gorey, were in joint second place with a very good score of 5/7.

In the under-12 Section the winner was Dan Nolan who was in joint second place in the tournament.

Krystian Sykorski of New Ross achieved second place in this section with an excellent score of 6/7 and he was closely followed by Luke Hennell from St. Joseph’s School Gorey on a score of 5.5/7.

Peter Kenny, as well as achieving joint second place overall, was also the best under-11 player. He was followed by Kevin O’Mahony from Piercestow­n and Marcin Babersky from New Ross, both of whom had a very good score of 5/7.

Johawn Shawn on a very good score of 5.5/7 won the under 10 Section and was closely followed by Ryan Lynch of Duncannon and Artur Kwiecien of New Ross both of whom scored 5/7.

The Under 9 section was won by Ruadhan Cullen who scored an excellent 5.5/7 followed by Andrew Hennell on 5/7 and Daniel Dowling 4/7. All three players are from St Joseph’s School in Gorey.

John Kenny of Piercestow­n National School won the Under 8 section on 4/7 followed by Eoin Finn of St Joseph’s School, Gorey, and Fabian Sikorsky of New Ross both of whom scored 3/7.

Tommy Nolan from Duncannon – the youngest player in the competitio­n – scored a very commendabl­e 2/7 points.

Wexford Chess would like to thank parents and teachers and also Brandon House Hotel for their support of the Tournament.

Edmund Rice Primary School from New Ross were very successful in winning a number of the individual medals and finishing in second place in the overall standings. Just one half point separated New Ross and Piercestow­n schools at the end of seven games of chess while Duncannon Primary School were delighted to finish in third. place , just pipping St Joseph’s in Gorey, who finished in fourth place overall.
