Bree race embraces the adventurous!
THOSE who have made New Year’s resolutions to get fit and be that little bit more adventurous will be heading straight for Bree next month to take part in the inaugural Slaney Valley Adventure Race on February 3.
The event is being organised by Ballyhogue GAA Club in conjunction with Wexford Kayak Safaris and will provide a great challenge to get your year off to the right start. Basically, the race consists of four stages. Beginning in Bree village, competitors will enjoy a rolling 22km cycle through the Slaney valley, crossing the river at Kilurin and then following the river back to Edermine. From here competitors will transfer to the water and complete 1km in a kayak. Then it’s back in the saddle for a short 4km return cycle to Bree for the final transition. The race finishes with a scenic 6.5km forest run around Bree Hill. At the finish line, competitors can compare times, enjoy the music and complimentary food and swap stories from the day.
All kayak equipment will be supplied on the day and each competitor’s time will be professionally recorded by Core Timing. Organisers promise that the race will cater for all levels of fitness from total beginners to elite athletes – all you need is a bike and a can-do attitude. Prizes on offer include €300 for the man and woman to complete the course in the quickest time, as well as prizes for second and third positions.
Ballyhogue GAA Club are inviting all local GAA clubs to compete with a special team prize of €2,000 for the fastest club team to complete the event. Club teams consist of four people and clubs can enter as many teams as they wish.
Entry to the event is €50 per person, plus booking fee and is open to anyone over 16 years. You can register via the Facebook page ‘Slaney Valley Adventure Race’ as well as on www.runireland.com. For all enquires contact Ballyhogue GAA at secretary.ballyhogue.wexford@gaa.ie.
