SCHOOL NEWS

Fifth and sixth class Confirmati­on takes place in Ferns on Friday, March 16, at 2 p.m. and First Holy Communion will take place on Saturday, April 28, If there are any homes where iPads, tablets or laptops are not being used the school would appreciate if they would consider donating them to the school for the children.

If you have anything you would like included in your local notes please contact 087 8274447 before 7 p.m. on Thursday evening. ‘A’ team’s Neill O’Sullivan Cup clash at home to Forth Celtic. Forty minutes into a first half that they totally dominated, Seán Roche headed our lads into the lead. With our lads piling on the pressure, it was only great work from the Celtic goalie that kept the score to 1-0 at the break. Brendan Burke scored our second goal early in the second half, another fine header and Mick Sweeney made it 3-0 shortly afterwards, tapping home a sweet Jamie Doyle cross.

GAA NEWS

Due to popular demand, the club will be placing another order for club half-zips in the near future. Adult half-zips cost €35 each while children’s cost €30. Mary Carton also has a limited supply of club hats, costing €15 each, for sale. To order a half-zip or a hat, please contact Mary at 087 9569533.

GAA BIGGEST LOSER

On Saturday last, January 20, Monageer-Boolavogue GAA club’s ‘Biggest Loser’ fundraisin­g competitio­n got under way with a weigh-in in the club complex in Monageer. This year, three teams are entered, Boolavogue, Monageer North and Monageer South.

The team will be organising various fundraiser­s over the course of their campaign and would very much appreciate your support. They will be running a table quiz in the Harrow on February 16 starting at 9 p.m.

MINISTERS OF THE WORD

On Saturday evening, January 27, Aodhagán Swords is the reader at the Vigil Mass while James Breen will be reading at the 11 a.m. Mass on Sunday morning. The Eucharisti­c Minister on duty on Saturday night is Geraldine Doyle and Catherine Gahan will be helping distribute Holy Communion at the 11 a.m. Mass on Sunday morning the 28th.

GAA LOTTO

The numbers draw last week in the Monageer-Boolavogue GAA lotto were 5, 9, 19 and 28. John Ivory and Joanne Breen each had three of them and shared the match-three prize of €160. For the next draw, due to take place on tonight, Tuesday, January 23, at 9.30 p.m. in Monageer, the jackpot has been increased to €3,550 and if you have not already got a ticket, they can be bought in the club complex immediatel­y before the draw. SYMPATHY

Sincere sympathy is extended to the family and relatives of Kathleen Murphy, née Nolan, Ballingate, who died last week, her remains were removed to Tomacork on Monday for 2 p.m. followed by burial in adjoining grave yard.

MODEL EXHIBITION

Carnew’s ninth annual model exhibition will take place on Sunday, February 4, in Coláiste Bhríde, Carnew, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with all the usual stalls of model farms, planes, trucks, farm Diorama’s, cars, trains, lego, tea, cakes and tombolla and many more. This year will be the first year of the all-Ireland Miniature Steam Engine Rally. Admission is adults €5 children free, contact Richie at 087 6641878 or Trevor 087 2702380. Proceeds this year will go towards the school and the Back Alley Project, all support is greatly appreciate­d.

AWARDS

Congratula­tions to all who have won the GAA Awards for last year but especially Jody Byrne on the junior B hurling award, Chris Doyle, Coolboy for the handball and Des Burton for the Lifetime Achievemen­t Award, they were presented with their Awards on Saturday night in the Arklow Bay Hotel. Well done to all.

CHAIR AND FLOOR YOGA

Ballyellis School is running a new fundraiser called split-thepot in aid of school funds which has just started. Envelopes can be obtained from the School or any parent and Askamore Church after weekend Masses. Draws will take place every Friday morning in Ballyellis School. This is a new and exciting venture for Ballyellis School and best of luck to everyone.

TINAHELY WALKING CLUB

On January 28 the walk is at Kaideen. Grade B, 10km, three hours. Meeting in Tinahely at 10.00. On Sunday, February 4, the walk is at Annagh Hill. Grade B, 9k, three hours, meeting at Tinahely 10.00 or the Gap at 10.15. Please ensure to wear proper walking boots, to bring adequate food and drink and to pack (or wear) rain gear.

BALLYOUGHT­ER PLAY

Ballyought­er Drama Group will present its two act hilarious comedy ‘Nobody’s Talking to Me’ by Tommy Marren, in Camolin Hall on Friday and Saturday, January 26 and 27, and Friday and Saturday, February 2 and 3, at 8 p.m. Tickets will go on sale in January. The play will feature a cast of eight, directed by Jimmy Kavanagh.
