Fifth year student Aine Brennan raises €1,000
Fifth year student Aine Brennan from Gorey Community School has managed to raise €1,000 for the Gambia Youth Project.
Aine raised the money through a sit-down meal she held one day in Eco Restaurant in Gorey. Eco handed over a percentage of the money raised to Aine through the set menu they had for the event.
Aine, along with 24 other students from Gorey Community School, will head to Gambia in Africa on Tuesday, February 20 for a total of eight days.
Aine’s mother, Evette Brennan, wanted to stress how thankful she was to the owners of Eco and the staff, all of the sponsors, and to everyone who donated something on the day.
Many people didn’t go home empty handed after their meal. Aine held a monster raffle and many of the local businesses donated the prizes.
‘It was a long day, but we worked hard,’ said Evette. ‘Aine did it all by herself, it was a great day.’
The Gambia Youth Project runs every two years and 25 students accompanied by five adults will go there to visit seven schools and an orphanage, which receives ongoing support through the fundraising efforts.
Over the past few months, all of the students have raised more than €20,000 to take with them on the trip and to pass on to the projects they do in Africa.
Teachers who work in the school will be paid and medical supplies will be distributed to the orphanage.
