Phyllis to remain as Old Folk’s chair

- By SARA GAHAN

AFTER five successful years, Phyllis Dempsey will continue as chairperson of St Columba’s Old Folks Club.

Phyllis, who had intended to step down from her role as chair, made her decision to stay during last week’s AGM when no one stepped up to the role.

‘I just think it is time for someone else to do it, I have served my time,’ said Phyllis.

Newest member Margaret Donohoe will take on the role as vice-chairperson, while Anita Fyfe and Pauline Stedmond will both be the club treasurers.

Phyllis said it is also the sixth year for Margaret Cooper who will carry out the duties of secretary. Eileen Kavanagh, who previously was PRO for two years, will be assistant secretary.

Karen Kenny Donohoe will be PRO for the club for the first time.

The rest of the committee members includes Mags Kenny, Frances Murphy, Mary Shiels, Marie Beagan, Brenda Kavanagh, Maggie Kavanagh, Margaret Doyle, and Dermot Dunbar.

St Columba’s was set up 53 years ago by Joe Funge and his father. Phyllis said new members are always welcome to join.

They meet every Tuesday, from 12 noon, until 3 p.m., and every Wednesday, from 7 p.m., until 10.15 p.m., in Sean O’Byrne Park.

The club play bingo, listen to live music from Pat Jordan, Mick Doyle, Colm Brennan and Fintan Dungan, enjoy refreshments and go on trips every now and then.
