Askamore DEEPEST SYMPATHY

The community of Askamore and surroundin­g areas were both shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden death of Catherine Kelly of Ballyellis Crossroads. Catherine was buried in Askamore cemetery following Requiem Mass in St Brigid’s Church, Askamore on Thursday last. We extend our deepest sympathy to her son Christophe­r, sister Betty, brother James and to all of her extended family.

DAY OUT TO KILDARE

Please note that an incorrect date was given for the day out in last week’s notes. The correct day is in fact Saturday, February 24. We plan a visit to the Irish National Stud and Gardens. The guided tour of the Stud, the Japanese Garden and St Fiachra’s Garden plus bus transport will cost €30 per adult. The bus will leave Askamore at 9 a.m. and should return by 6 p.m.

We will take a drive through the famous 5,000 acre Curragh to take in views of the Curragh Racecourse, Curragh Camp and Donnelly’s Hollow before arriving at the National Stud. We will finish the day off with a stop at Rathwood, Tullow for afternoon tea or a full meal.

FREEDOM FIT

We have two excellent events planned as part of Freedom Fit in North Wexford, February 9 to February 17. next. On February 13., 8 p.m. to 9 p.m., Niamh Fitzpatric­k will come to Askamore.

Niamh’s talk is titled ‘Using your mind for Optimum Performanc­e in sport, work and life’. A talk not to be missed. On Friday, February 16, join us for the Askamore Loop Night Walk. SENIOR ALERT

Senior Alert Scheme applicatio­n form are available for Askamore community residents. The purpose of this scheme is to enable persons of limited means to continue to live securely in their homes with confidence, independen­ce and peace of mind by providing them with a free personal monitored alarm. DIGITAL SKILLS

Computer/digital skills course will begin on Friday, February 9, from 9.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. for five weeks. Adele will be in touch with participan­ts to confirm their places. This course is funded by Dept. Communicat­ions, Climate Action and Environmen­t.

COMMUNITY GAMES.

We are indebted to the huge contributi­on Tommy Kehoe made to Kilrush-Askamore Community Games over the past decade and wish him every success for the future.

Draughts continues every Monday night in Askamore Community Centre 7-8. Proposed dates for competitio­ns are: Draughts January 27, Badminton February 17 and art and Handwritin­g March 10.

FINCHES FITNESS.

LIP SYNC BATTLE

Kilrush-Askamore GAA Club and Kilrush camogie club would like to give a huge thanks to everyone who supported our Lip Sync fundraiser. The participan­ts spent the whole winter practising and fundraisin­g, and they can be immensely proud of what they’ve achieved. And we hope our sponsors get the extra business they so richly deserve after digging deep to support our effort. We also would like to thank those in attendance on the night, those who turned up in their droves for the individual fundraiser­s, and everyone who helped out in any way; we owe you all a debt of gratitude.

KILRUSH DRAMA GROUP

Congratula­tions to Olivia Matthews and David Dee were both nominated for the most promising young Actor award at the One Act Festival in Bray last Friday night where they performed ‘Bar and Ger’ by Geraldine Aaron.

The cast of Kilrush Drama Group’s production of ‘The Weir’ by Conor McPherson, are all set to take to the stage in St Brigid’s Hall, Carnew for their first performanc­es on Friday, February 16, and 18. Please note change of date. Under the direction of Mick Byrne, and featuring in the Weir are Catherine Stafford, PJ Arthur, Maurice Ruth, Joe Sinnott and Brendan Doyle.

Back stage crew are also busy now with preparatio­ns with Lar Duffy and crew building the set and Jacinta Kavanagh organising costumes. Sound and lighting technician­s, Paddy Byrne and Kevin McEvoy will add their expertise to the production, and Stage Manager, Tommy Kavanagh is also now busy preparing for the production.

With the all-Ireland Confined Drama taking place in Carnew this year, this will be the only opportunit­y to see this production in Carnew. Admission: €10

DRAMA FESTIVAL

South Wicklow Drama Festival will host a music and Drama night in Jim Byrne’s Lounge Carnew on Saturday, February 24, as a fundraiser for all-Ireland.

Music will be by John Bass and family and drama by members of Kilrush Drama Group. A limited number of patron tickets will be available for sale on this night. All are welcome for what promises to be a fun night out.

AMORIS LAETITIA

The World Meeting of families will take place in Dublin from August 21 to August 26 and Pope Francis plans to attend. In all our churches we have a Banner and an Icon drawing our attention to this event. At the foot of the Icon are two Latin words ‘Amoris Laetitia’ (‘The joy of Love’).

Our grouping of the three parishes of Bunclody, Ferns and Kilrush are now preparing for the WMF by having a six session period of reflection and discussion on marriage and the family. These will take place in the Parish Pastoral Centre in Bunclody for all three parish areas.

They will commence on Thursday next at 7.30 p.m. and will continue each Thursday till March 22, excluding March 8 due to a Parish Mission for the three areas. The topic for this coming Thursday will be ‘The Reality of family life today’, the following week will be ‘The Christian Vision for the Family’.

A full list of talks will be found on the leaflets in all churches. We encourage you to please come along and bring a friend or two. We are family so let us journey together.

The Mission for the three parishes will take place from Sunday, March 4, at 7.30 p.m. concluding on Thursday, March 8, at 7.30 p.m. Leaflets will be distribute­d in the next week with full details.

Carnew SYMPATHY

Sincere sympathy is extended to the family and relatives of Cathrine Mulhall, née Kelly, Ballyellis, who died during the week, her remains were removed to Askamore on Thursday for 11 a.m. Mass, followed by burial in adjoining grave yard.

To the family and relatives of Ann Jordan, Millbank, Shillelagh, née Byrne, The Terrace, Carnew, who died on Sunday, her remains were removed to Shillelagh on Wednesday for midday, followed by burial in adjoining church yard.

To Kay Porter, Kilcavan her family and relatives on the death of her mother recently in Dublin.

On February 11 the walk is at Lowbawn-Little Sugarloaf. Grade B, 14km, 3.5 hours. Meeting in Tinahely at 10 a.m. On Sunday, February 18, the walk is at Slievebawn-Tomduff. Grade B, 10k, three hours, meeting at Bunclody at 10 a.m. Please ensure to wear proper walking boots, to bring adequate food and drink and to pack (or wear) rain gear.

DEATH

Sincere sympathy is extended to the family and friends of the late Bridget Burke (Court) who passed away during the week and whoe funeral Mass took place on Wednesday, January 31, in Monamolin, with burial afterwards to the a joining Cementary. May she rest in peace.
