JOE IS A LIFE SAVER

Hero councillor steps in to help distressed young man with knife wound

- By ESTHER HAYDEN

A YOUNG MAN who had apparently ingested a quantity of Paracetamol and inflicted a knife wound on himself was saved by the actions of Cllr Joe Sullivan yesterday (Monday).

The man, who is in his early twenties, was sitting in the Market Square in Gorey on Monday morning. Cllr Sullivan who was passing through the area paused to speak to the young man as he recognised he was in considerable distress. The young man

told Cllr Sullivan he had taken a quantity of Paracetamol tablets which he had just purchased in a number of separate transactions and also cut himself in the midsection having also just purchased a Stanley knife.

Cllr Sullivan dismissed the notion he was a hero, saying he was simply reacting to the man’s distress.

‘When I saw him I knew he was distressed and not himself. I went over to him and he said he had taken the tablets and cut himself and he was crying. I spoke to the ambulance control personnel on the phone and also talked to the young man who said he just wanted to talk to someone.

‘He was very distraught but fortunately the cut wasn’t too bad and wasn’t bleeding much. I just kept talking to him and reassuring him that everything was going to be ok until the gardai came and they brought him for medical attention.

‘Hopefully he will get the help he needs and will make a full recovery,’ said Cllr Sullivan.
