COMPETITORS TESTED TO THE LIMIT IN SLANEY VALLEY ADVENTURE RACE
OVER 150 participants lined up to take on all of the gruelling obstacles that the local landscape has to offer recently as they took on the Slaney Valley Adventure Race. Consisting of four stages, the race saw competitors set off by bike from Bree village, cycling 22km through the Slaney Valley and crossing the river at Killurin and heading back for Edermine. From there, it was onto the water to complete 1km in a kayak before getting back in the saddle for a short 4km back to Bree and a 6.5km forest run around Bree Hill to finish.
The event, staged in association with Ballyhogue GAA Club, was said to have been a huge success and tested competitors to their limits.
‘It was a great day,’ said Joanne Rochford, one of those behind the event. ‘Everything went off without a hitch. We had a bit of a shower when we were trying to start, but then the weather improved and conditions were perfect. The drop of rain did make things a bit more challenging on Bree Hill though. The feedback from those who took part has been really good and next year we’re hoping to put a lot more time and planning into it and we have some great points to build on.’
Two of the prizes on offer on the day went to the same household as ultra-fit husband and wife team of Tom and Dena Hogan were the first male and female past the post. The first club team over the line was Rathnure GAA Club, scooping a prize of €2,000.
