Ferns boxing club in bid to land funding for new roof

- By PÁDRAIG BYRNE

WHILE it may seem like a silly pun, St Aidan’s Boxing Club in Ferns is a club that has been punching well above its weight for many years. The club has been at the heart of the community in the village for over 30 years and over that time it has seen an abundance of silverware including countless county titles, around 50 Leinster titles and 28 Irish titles, along with some international accolades.

While the club has fostered a winning mentality in the young fighters that file through its doors, it now finds itself in dire straits as the roof of the club’s headquarters in the village is on the verge of collapsing and rendering them homeless.

‘It’s very bad at the minute,’ said Club Secretary and Coach Michael Andrews, who has been with the club for 27 years. ‘It’s completely falling in on itself. The last couple of bad storms haven’t done us any favours, but we’re in desperate need of a new roof.’

While the IABA has promised to come up with half of the money and the club has managed to dip into savings, they still find themselves around €6,000 short. As a result, the club is appealing to local businesses and members of the local community to dig deep and keep this local institution going. All donations, big and small, will be gratefully received, as the club aims to plough on and start work in the coming month.
