Wind and snow could cut power
ELECTRICITY supply could be affected if the forecast snow storm is accompanied by high winds and emergency crews are on standby to carry out repairs, according to an ESB spokesman on Monday. Snow doesn’t usually affect the electricity network, but if there are high winds, as predicted, damage to lines is a possibility.
The speed of repairs and re-connections could be hampered by difficult road conditions, While the ESB has four by four vehicles available, there may be delays in reaching cutoff areas.
The last major weather-related power cut in Wexford was in October 2017 when thousands of households were left without electricity as a result of the damage caused by Storm Ophelia.
‘The electricity network is built and continually upgraded to withstand events such as these but extreme weather, heavy snowfalls and freezing temperatures can affect underground and overhead electricity cables and wires’, said the spokesman.
‘ESB Networks are preparing for the warning of snow and freezing temperatures issued by Met Eireann for this week and have a full emergency response in place to address any power outages,’ he added.
To report an outage or dangerous situation call 1850 372 999 or go to the ESB website. To check restoration times, visit powercheck.ie, download the Powercheck app or check the ESB website.
