Husband deterimed to get to hospital for his wife

- By SARA GAHAN

As the majority of people in Gorey were snowed in over the weekend, this did not stop individual Pat Kinsella who brought his wife to dialysis treatment on Saturday to St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin.

The determined husband was rescued on Saturday by three men from Castletown – Charlie McCarthy, Sean O’Shaughnessy and John Kavanagh. They pulled Pat’s jeep out of the snow after it got stuck outside of his home on St Michael’s Road, Gorey.

‘It was vital we got there on Saturday after it was cancelled for Friday,’ said Pat. ‘I collected another lady on the Courtown Road who also receives dialysis in St Vincent’s.’

The tractor pulled Pat’s jeep out and ploughed through the large snow drifts. Pat said they were towed as far as the Old Gorey/Arklow Road and from there travelled to the Courtown Road to collect the other patient.

‘Within a few minutes we were on the M11,’ said Pat. ‘It was completely snow free and there was no traffic for majority of the trip.’

The two ladies received their treatment, and Pat brought them back home safely the same day. He said both of the ladies are wheelchair users.

St Vincent’s Hospital decided not to go ahead with dialysis on Friday but told patients, if they could make it, to be there on Saturday before 12 noon. The ladies normally take a taxi, but due to the severe weather the taxi was trapped. ‘They could not afford to wait another day,’ said Pat. ‘I can’t thank the three men from Castletown enough.’
