‘Eggtravaganza’ dress in the Grand Final

-

Transition year students from Gorey Community School have made it through to the final of Bank of Ireland Junk Kouture.

The Junk Kouture team of Katie Leppla, Aja Sinclair and Emily Kavanagh made it to the final with their costume ‘Eggstravaganza’. Their dress, which is made of reusable items, will take to the stage on Thursday, April 19, in the 3Arena, Dublin.

The bodice is structured with chicken wire and decorated with egg shells. The birdcage skirt is made from unused piping and the flower motifs were created from manipulating water bottles.

There were over 1,500 regional entries this year and Gorey Community School was one out of 40 to be chosen for a ’Silver Ticket’. The ticket put them straight into the Regional Final at the Helix in Dublin last week, and now they will compete in the grand final after judges made the tough decision of who to pick.

The students began a search in October for sustainable and unwanted materials to turn into items of clothing as part of the competition. They were asked to design and create a wearable piece of couture from recycled materials.

As part of their research, they travelled to the Rediscovery Centre in Dublin which has four reuse social enterprises focusing on furniture, fashion, paint and cycling. These enterprises use waste and unwanted materials as a resource and raw material for new product design. Gorey Community School would like to wish luck.
