‘Magic Stones’ are placed around town

- By SARA GAHAN

GOREY Tidy Towns has just taken delivery of its first Cloch Draíochta (Magic Stone) which has been installed at the Magic Compass Garden on Charlotte Row.

The Magic Compass Garden was planned and planted in partnership with Gorey Central School in 2015.

A total of ten Magic Stones will be placed in the coming weeks at projects created and maintained by Gorey Tidy Towns around the town.

‘We wanted to do something so people could recognise our projects,’ said Gorey Tidy Towns chairperson Billy Halford. ‘So if you see a Magic Stone, you’ll know that it’s our project.’

He paid special tribute to Pobal which provided funding to mark 60 years of Tidy Towns in Ireland.

The €3,000 grant was used not only to purchase the stones, but also a strimmer, new metal posters for the Heritage Orchard, and some upcoming projects, details of which will be announced in the coming weeks. The stones were sourced locally from Redmond’s Garden Centre on the Arklow Road

Volunteer Carmel Ryan said the committee wanted an ornament which would help link all the Tidy Towns projects. She added that there has already been a great reaction to the first Magic Stone.

She explained that the stones will begin arriving at other sites during the next few weeks including: the Heritage Orchard at the Fire Station; An Gairdín Draíochta on the Coach Road; an Choill Draíochta on the Coach Road; the planted area on Wexford Street; flower beds at Park Avenue piers, Gorey Town Park, Gorey Railway Station; the picnic area on the old Enniscorthy Road; and at the Gorey Tidy Towns shed at the Civic Square.

It’s a particularly busy time for Gorey Tidy Towns, and more volunteers are badly needed. Volunteers can help in various ways, and are most welcome along to join a working group which meets at the Tidy Towns shed at the top of the Civic Square car park on Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. and Saturday mornings at 10 a.m.
