Over €6,000 raised for Gorey-Malawi group
More than €6,000 was raised for Gorey-Malawi Health Partnership at last week’s ‘The Magic of the Movies and Musicals’ concert held in Christ Church Gorey.
The concert featured West End singer Annalene Beechey, her sister Lynette Beechey, internationally renowned soprano Deirdre Masterson and her sister Kelli-Ann Masterson. This was the first time the four sopranos, who are originally from Gorey, sung together since their school days.
The event was enjoyed by all age groups and resulted in a well-deserved standing ovation at the end of the performance.
The concert featured a range of songs, with a special performance from Pat Fitzpatrick, members from Irish College of Musical Theatre and accompanist Conor McCarthy.
Earlier in the show, the musicians did a beautiful piece called ‘Here’s to the Heroes’ which incorporates a touching story experienced by one of the GPs who visited Malawi. It highlighted how difficult it can be to access healthcare in many parts of the world with one billion people never seeing a healthworker in their whole lives.
The audience was reminded that the true heroes were the families in Africa who travel long distances to access healthcare, the healthworkers who work in difficult conditions to care for people and also the people of Gorey who are so generously supporting a community 12,000 km away and helping create a better future
The money raised on the night will go directly to buy medicines and equipment which will be brought to Malawi in June when two doctors from the Palms GP Surgery in Gorey travel there.
