GAA RESULTS

In atrocious conditions, the under-13 hurlers battled bravely in Bree on Tuesday night last, the first day of the summer. Despite great displays from Alfie Murphy, Bobby Codd, Thomas Deacon and Evan Dunne, our team lost.

GAA CYCLE

The ‘Biggest Loser’ cycle, postponed because of the heavy snow in March, took place on Sunday, April 29. Colm Kelly was the first home from the 50km cyclists while Rory Leacy did likewise in the 16km race.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL

The Junior ‘A’ footballers beat Volunteers 1-8 to 0-9 in Páirc Charman last week. Despite fielding without Daire Turner, the return of Stephen Murphy strengthened the squad. The heavy conditions proved no problem to Micheál Gahan, who smashed the shot to the back of the net that ultimately separated the teams. This victory means that the team has not tasted away defeat in two seasons. With the swift return of Daire Turner expected, the team’s prospects look very good.

Team was: Colin Hawkins, Pauric Walshe, Barry Murphy, James Donohoe, Lee McHale, Brian O’Loughlin, James Gahan, Mark Walsh, Seán McCabe, Stephen Murphy, Robbie Donnelly, John Murphy, Denis Walsh, Rob Breen, Micheál Gahan. Subs: Seán O’Leary, Peter Mernagh.

On Monday the under-15s, understrength due to injury, were away to St Joseph’s in the cup semi-final. St Joseph’s, topping the Premier league and playing with star players from Craanford and Glynn, lead by 2-0 at the interval. Bigger and stronger, they added two more in the second half to progress to the cup final. Everyone in St Cormac’s wishes them the best of luck in the final.

The previous Saturday they had beaten New Ross town in a league encounter. Tristan Byrne sent in a brilliant looping shot early in play, only to see it rebound off the crossbar. With the team keeping up relentless pressure, Liam Gahan sent a great cross to Joe Ivory, whose stunning volley left the New Ross keeper stuck to the ground. Game over. Manager Cha Byrne was fulsome in his praise for the attack and praised the defence for playing one of the games of the season, without a chink in his carefully crafted defence.

The under-14 girls who lost their first game of the season recently, going down to North End in the cup quarter final, bounced back with a 1-0 win on Friday, April 27. Taking on Bree United in a tough physical game, Sophie Kirwan scored the winning goal.
