Official opening of sensory path at Monageer Grotto

-

Sunday next, June 24, will mark another significant milestone in the on-going development of Monageer Parish Grotto with the official opening of the new sensory path.

Bishop Denis Brennan will celebrate open air mass at 12 noon, followed by the ‘cutting of the ribbon’ by a member of Wexford County Council. Bishop Brennan will bless the path and then lead a procession along the path, through the looped William O’Brien Woodland Walk, stopping at two stations for brief prayers.

An afternoon’s entertainment is also planned. Children from the local national school will display their crafts and paintings in the marquee, while students from the Sinead Doyle School of dance will give a demonstration of their dancing skills. There will also be a Fairy Treasure Hunt for all to participate in and a stall selling plants and fairy doors. As usual, teas/coffees and buns will be available from the marquee. Those attending are encouraged to bring a picnic and avail of the large grass area to pitch their blankets.

The making of this sensory path has come about as a result of the tremendous work undertaken by a large number of volunteers from within the Monageer community. Work started on the project in October 2015 and, in less than 3 years, a magnificent facility has been created, one that has something for everyone and offers access to all - no matter their ability.

Sensory was the theme used throughout the creation of the path and items to stimulate the 5 senses (sight, touch, smell, hearing and taste) have been placed in positions that are accessible by all visitors.

The use of recycled materials was very important too as a new lease of life has been given to items that would otherwise have been dumped or discarded. Used telegraph poles, car tyres, cavity blocks and pallets have all added to and enhanced the borders. The vast amount of planting throughout has been possible by the propagating of flowers over a number of years by Mary Nolan. Donations of plants have also been gratefully accepted and planted. Many local contractors and labourers have given both machinery and their time whenever called upon for specialist projects.

So, come along to Monageer Grotto on Sunday for an enjoyable and uplifting afternoon.
